Mission and objectives

In its resolution 72/279 of 31 May 2018, the General Assembly created a dedicated, impartial empowered and sustainable development-focused coordination function for the United Nations development system, drawing on the expertise and assets of all United Nations development system entities, including specialized and non-resident agencies. The Resident Coordinator system ensures the coordination of all organizations of the United Nations dealing with operational activities for development at the country level, regardless of the nature of their presence in the country. It encompasses the UN Resident Coordinator, the UN Country Team and Resident Coordinator’s Office and is served by the UN Development Coordination Office.

Context

The Office of the UN Resident Coordinator provides leadership to the UN Country Team and the UN’s programming work, as outlined in the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, in support of national priorities. The Resident Coordinator to Fiji, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu & Vanuatu is Mr Sanaka Samarasinha, who leads a team composed of national and international staff. This UNV assignment will see the incumbent join the communications section of the RC’s team and support the office, the Pacific UN Communications Group, and other activities where necessary.

Task description

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Media, Communications & Advocacy Lead or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Media, Communications & Advocacy Officer will: · Create social media content, including support to photography, videos, and graphics where required · Support to media engagement in all countries under the Fiji multi-country Office (Fiji, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu) · Support the Communications Lead to implement the Communications Plan, and the workplan of the Pacific UN Communications Group · Support the Communications Lead to meet communications targets under the UN Disability Inclusion Strategy (UNDIS) · Participate in weekly team meetings and other key meetings · During a crisis, create content (under guidance of the Comms Lead) specifically highlighting UN support to the crisis daily, as well as to highlight other related updates · Distribute the daily PACNEWS updates · Support events, including the creation of merchandise for the office · Provide support where required to the Pacific UN Communications Group (UNCG) · Create and maintain a bi-monthly newsletter for the Fiji multi-country Office · Contribute to the initial drafting of speeches, media release and other publications, including short stories where needed · Support to the updating of mailing lists · Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor. Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities: · Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); · Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; · Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities. · Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; · Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; · Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
