Geneva Call is a neutral and impartial non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting respect by Armed Groups, De Facto Authorities (AGDAs) and Provisional Governments for international humanitarian norms in armed conflict and other situations of violence, in particular those related to the protection of civilians. Geneva Call focuses its efforts on banning the use of anti-personnel mines, protecting children from the effects of armed conflict, prohibiting sexual violence in armed conflict, working towards the elimination of gender discrimination, protecting civilian infrastructure, and ensuring humanitarian access.

Geneva Call / Appel de Genève is a neutral, impartial, and independent international humanitarian organization. In situations of armed conflict, Geneva Call endeavors to strengthen respect for humanitarian norms and principles by armed groups and de facto or provisional authorities, with the aim of improving the protection of civilians.

To support its communications and engagement objectives, Geneva Call seeks to recruit a full-time Editorial Consultant based in Beirut to produce high-quality editorial content, with a particular focus on showcasing the organization’s work and impact across its countries of operation.

Purpose of the Consultancy

The purpose of this consultancy is to strengthen Geneva Call’s editorial output by identifying, researching, writing, and editing compelling articles and other editorial content that demonstrate the organization’s work, impact, and relevance in conflict-affected settings. The consultant will contribute to the development and maintenance of a story pipeline to ensure a regular and strategic flow of content. While there will be a regional focus to the consultant’s work, the consultant will also support content production related to other regions where Geneva Call operates, as required.

Scope of Work and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Global Engagement Unit (GEU), the Global Editorial Consultant will be responsible for the following:

Content Production

  • Identify, research, and produce high-quality editorial content, including:
  • Long-form success stories and human-interest stories

Interviews

  • Milestone pieces, donor success snapshots, and end-of-project impact stories
  • Blog series aligned with thematic priorities
  • Supporting social media copy and newsletter content, including the ability to adapt editorial content into platform-specific formats, with a particular focus on LinkedIn and other priority social media channels
  • Micro-stories (100–200 words) drawn from longer pieces
  • Contributions to reports and other publications
  • Produce content primarily in English; the ability to work in French and/or Arabic is a strong asset.
  • Ensure content is accurate, compelling, and aligned with Geneva Call’s mission, values, editorial standards, and ethical guidelines.

Ethical Storytelling

  • Apply conflict-sensitive, ethical, and responsible storytelling practices at all stages of content production.
  • Ensure informed consent, protection of sources, anonymization where necessary, and respect for the dignity, safety, and agency of individuals and communities featured.
  • Avoid political positioning, stigmatization, or harm, in line with Geneva Call’s principles of neutrality, impartiality, and independence.

Editorial Support

  • Edit, rewrite, and polish content drafted by country teams, regional offices, or HQ colleagues.
  • Adapt content for different audiences, platforms, and formats, ensuring clarity, consistency, and narrative coherence.
  • Provide hands-on support to country teams on concrete communication needs, including the development of communication materials and the implementation of country-level communication strategies, in close alignment with global guidance.

Coordination and Research

  • Work closely with country teams to identify story opportunities and gather information through interviews and desk research.
  • Coordinate regularly with the Global Engagement Unit at headquarters in Geneva and with regional teams to align on priorities, messaging, and timelines.
  • Validate thematic and technical information with relevant HQ colleagues, including PRL, as required.
  • Support the implementation of Geneva Call’s editorial calendar.
  • Lead the animation, coordination, and implementation of a global editorial calendar for the organization, ensuring coherence, consistency, and strategic alignment across regions and teams.
  • Act as a strong force of proposal by proactively identifying editorial priorities, story angles, formats, and timing, in line with organizational objectives.

Geographic Focus

Priority countries and regions may include, but are not limited to: Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, Myanmar, the Philippines, Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the Sahel, and Colombia.

Travel

Occasional travel to field locations may be required, subject to security conditions and organizational needs.

Deliverables

  • In alignment with the editorial calendar and organizational priorities, the consultant is expected to:
  • Identify, research, and produce long-form success stories, in close collaboration with country teams and with support from HQ.
  • Contribute additional shorter-form editorial content as required.
  • Participate in regular planning, coordination, and review meetings with the Global Engagement Unit and other team members.

Reporting and Management

The Global Editorial Consultant will work in close coordination with the Global Communications Coordinator and report to the Head of Global Engagement as part of the Global Engagement Unit.

The consultant will collaborate closely with the Global Engagement Unit, the Global Communications Coordinator, and relevant regional and country teams.

Regular coordination and reporting meetings will be held to align on priorities, timelines, editorial planning, and overall communications strategy.

Technical skills and experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in editorial and content production, including writing long-form content.
  • Proven experience producing high-quality storytelling and success stories.
  • Prior experience with international or regional organizations, preferably NGOs, is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of humanitarian, development, or conflict-related issues.
  • Fluent English required; fluency in French and/or Arabic is a strong asset.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and interviewing skills, with strong attention to fact-checking, narrative coherence, and plain-language editing.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and collaborate effectively with diverse teams and approval processes.
  • Ability to adapt content to Geneva Call’s tone, voice, and ethical standards.
  • Strong agility in producing and adapting content for social media platforms, particularly LinkedIn, with a clear understanding of formats, audiences, and engagement dynamics.
  • Demonstrated experience working with humanitarian NGOs and a strong understanding of issues related to the protection of civilians; any direct professional experience in this area is considered a significant asset.
  • Creative profile with a proactive sense of initiative, strong autonomy, excellent interpersonal skills, and a natural political sensitivity appropriate to complex and conflict-affected environments.

Education

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in journalism, communications, international relations, development studies, or a related field.

Contractual Arrangements

Contract type: International contract between HQ and the consultant

Duration: 9 months, renewable

Duty station: Beirut, Lebanon

The consultancy is full-time (40 hours per week)

Candidates must have the legal right to live and work in Lebanon
