The individual contractor will contribute to the project by providing analytical support and strategic insights to advance understanding of investment policies and de-risking approaches in selected sectors, particularly in the context of climate-related investment.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Individual Contractor's work will contribute to UNCTAD's research and policy analysis on investment promotion in developing countries, including de-risking investment for the SDGs and investment promotion in climate-relevant sectors; contribute to the update of the Investment Policy Monitor database, including through the monitoring of measures relevant to investment promotion; and support the preparation of the upcoming World Investment Forum. Under the supervision of the Economic Affairs Officer and the overall guidance of the Chief of the Policy Research Section, DIAE, the consultant will deliver research, analytical, database, and event preparation support. The individual contractor will: (a) Conduct research, data analysis and drafting on de-risking investment for the SDGs, including de-risking approaches, mechanisms and strategies in selected sectors such as renewable energy, with a view to identifying key trends, good practices and policy recommendations relevant to investment promotion in developing countries; (b) Carry out research, data analysis and drafting on investment promotion in climate-relevant sectors, including issues related to the energy transition, to support ongoing analytical work and upcoming technical assistance activities; (c) Assist in the preparation of World Investment Forum (WIF) events, in particular a workshop on de-risking, bringing together investment promotion agencies (IPAs) and relevant outward investment stakeholders, including ECAs and DFIs, to discuss de-risking solutions and cooperation to promote investment in the SDGs. The individual contractor will support the organization, including through speaker identification and outreach, background research on selected topics, and logistical, coordination and communication tasks as required; (d) Assist in the monitoring, review and entry of newly adopted investment policy measures in member States of the United Nations for entry into the Investment Policy Monitor database, with a specific focus on inward and outward investment promotion-related measures adopted by countries, so as to support comparative analysis, the identification of best practices, and policy advisory work for developing countries.

Qualifications/special skills

Advanced university degree, Master, in Economics or Public Policy is required. At least 1 year of working experience in research activities related to economic policies, company law or business operations is required. Experience in international investment is desirable. Experience working in an international organization is an advantage. Familiarity with climate change issues and the energy transition is also an advantage.

Languages

Fluency written and spoken in English is required.
