Duties and Responsibilities

This position is located primarily in the United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The Internship Programme is unpaid and full-time, i.e., an intern is expected to work five days per week (40 hours). This internship position is offered on an in-person basis or remote. The internship will be located in the Division on International Trade and Commodities (DITC), Commodities Branch. The internship will tentatively start on 18 May 2026 for 4 months. For in-person internships, interns must have a valid visa. All costs of travel, accommodation, medical insurance and living expenses must be covered by the intern. 1: Data collection and analysis Identify and document the value‑chain structure of a selected critical mineral detailing the physical and chemical transformation stages from extraction (ores and concentrates), through intermediate processing, to refined and downstream products. Analyze the intermediate products and processing steps involved at each stage of transformation, including their industrial uses and relevance for clean energy and other strategic applications. Identify and assign the corresponding Harmonized System (HS) codes (at the 2‑, 4‑ and, where relevant, 6‑digit levels) to raw materials, intermediate products, and final products associated with each transformation stage. Conduct structured data analysis to identify key market, technological, and policy drivers affecting critical energy transition minerals, and assess their implications for exporting and importing countries, supply security, value addition, and sustainable development. 2: Thematic research and synthesis Contribute to targeted research based on analyzed data on value addition, diversification and benefit sharing and compiling relevant best practices. Contribute to targeted research on establishing a global frameworks for traceability, transparency, and accountability across the minerals value chain and compiling relevant best practices. Assist in preparing background materials, presentations, and discussion inputs drawing on the intern’s analytical work. 3: Intergovernmental meetings Support the organization and preparation of intergovernmental meetings convened or facilitated by the Extractive Commodities Section, including the Global Commodities Forum and the Multi-year Expert Meeting on Commodities and Development. Identify potential speakers and panelists in coordination with supervisors and contribute to logistical arrangements.

Qualifications/special skills

The United Nations internship programme is intended to expose students or recent graduates to the United Nations in order to enhance their educational experience and to help them to gain experience in the work of the Organization. Therefore, applicants to the programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Moreover, interns should: • Should be computer literate in standard software applications, as well as in Adobe InDesign and Datawrapper; • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. The Knowledge of Excel package is required. The knowledge of other data visualization tool such as Data wrapper or power BI would be an asset. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D.
