Purpose/Rationale for the Assignment
Malaria is endemic throughout South Sudan, placing the entire population at risk and causing year-round transmission with seasonal peaks between July and November. The disease continues to exert a severe burden on the health system, accounting for an estimated 30–50% of outpatient consultations, over 40% of hospital admissions, and more than half of reported inpatient deaths. The 2017 Malaria Indicator Survey (MIS) found a parasite prevalence of 32% among children under five, with the highest burden in the Greater Bahr el Ghazal and Greater Equatoria regions, alongside evidence of a geographic shift in malaria transmission compared to previous surveys.
The Global Fund is the primary financier of malaria interventions in South Sudan, and UNICEF serves as the Principal Recipient of the Global Fund Malaria Grant Cycle 7 (GC7). Under GC7, UNICEF is supporting the implementation of the National Malaria Strategic Plan 2020–2025, and the 2026-2030, focusing on reducing malaria morbidity and mortality through a combination of effective malaria case management, vector control interventions, and resilient health systems strengthening—particularly health information systems, monitoring, and evaluation—to improve programme performance, accountability, and evidence-based decision-making.
