UNICEF Kenya considers the creation of various communication assets as a key component of its advocacy, visibility, and fundraising efforts. This is vital for the success of the country office’s resource mobilization and advocacy strategies. Additionally, it is essential to provide donors with visibility for their funding contributions. This not only ensures compliance with donor requirements but also facilitates transparent reporting on results achieved. Such measures support accountability, enhance public trust, and enforce UNICEF’s reputation as the partner of choice for donors and the government. Furthermore, compelling videos related to UNICEF Kenya’s programme areas serves public advocacy purposes, helping to inform and engage stakeholders and the wider community. The collection of video footage, interviews and photography also supports field missions involving donors, which require documentation support (videography and photography) for social media visibility and reporting purposes. Currently, an average of five visits and events are conducted every month involving national and county governments, key donors, development partners, national committees, celebrity and other supporters. These events and visits are important in raising awareness and advocacy, and for fundraising purposes, on an ongoing basis.

                                                         TERMS OF REFERENCE

Scope of Work: provide specific communication support to the programme teams as appropriate, in order to ensure professional, timely and adequate coverage of donor and UNICEF visibility and multi-media content collection, field visits, and events while working directly with the Communication Specialist and the Digital Officer.

Specific tasks include:

  1. Produce human-centred iPhone videos of beneficiaries, staff, celebrity supporters and donors while on location, in addition to photography coverage during events and visits as appropriate. This will include setting up sound, directing, framing, shooting, editing and packaging of the videos at a high standard for social media.  This may will include writing duties while on the ground including identification of beneficiaries, recording details, profiles and stories of beneficiaries featuring in the photographs and videos. The consultant will also participate in recces prior to missions.  These tasks will be assigned on an “as needed” basis and charged according to the consultant’s day rate, not to exceed the overall budget of the consultancy.
  2. Support filming crews on locations on selected planned videography missions in the CAP multimedia production planner. This will include equipment rigging, sound recording, lighting, crowd control, consent signing with beneficiaries, location scouting and identification and production of beneficiaries for filming. Given the unpredictable nature of ad-hoc content gathering and media visits, extra tasks may be assigned on an “as needed” basis, and charged according to the consultant’s day rate, not to exceed the overall budget of the consultancy.
  3. Support in the organisation and execution of high-level field visits including those involving the Representative, Deputy Representatives, the Regional Director and other senior leadership from the global team, planned for 2026.
  4. Ensure timely and appropriate availability of UNICEF and donor visibility materials on sites where events and filming and/or photography will be taking place. This includes the delivery and strategic placement of banners, stickers, signs and other relevant collateral at venues and visit location sites. 
  5. Support in facilitating the participation of children and young people for key events including International Day of Play, World Children’s Day, other key moments, days, filming missions and virtual donor experiences. The consultant with utilise his/her network of young people from appropriate target groups to engage with UNICEF and partners on child rights issues.
  6. Support the Communication, Advocacy and Partnerships (CAP) section with other visit and event-related tasks, as determined by the Communication Specialist, paid according to the consultant’s day rate.

Minimum requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, Mass Media, Communications, Development Studies, or related fields required.

 Work Experience:

  • A minimum of five years relevant professional work experience in development/humanitarian communication, print, broadcast media or interactive digital media and events, including experience covering children’s issues for a child rights organisation such as UNICEF.

Language Requirements:

  • English and Kiswahili are required, both oral and written fluency.

Knowledge/Expertise/Skills:

  • Proven experience in photography and videography.
  • Proven experience in supporting and planning for donor field visits.
  • Proven ability in human interest story research and writing and video scripting.
  • Strong planning and organisational skills.
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team and have a strong understanding of UNICEF programmes.
  • Managing and supporting multiple crews in content collection in complex development and humanitarian contexts.
  • Knowledge of multimedia production equipment and software including cameras, microphones, editing equipment computer systems, online platforms and various office applications, specifically interactive digital media.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural environment and establish harmonious and effective working relationships, both within and outside the organization.
