 We Effect is now recruiting a Programme Officer – Agronomist. The position is part of the IMPACT Programme in Uganda. The employment is a fixed-term position aligned to programme duration. Start date as soon as possible.

Main responsibilities

The Programme Officer – Agronomist provides technical support to strengthen agronomic practices, farmer training, extension support, and climate-smart production systems among partner organisations and producer groups. The role focuses on improving productivity, quality, sustainability, and resilience in coffee, vanilla, cocoa and related livelihood systems. Key responsibilities include supporting farmer extension services, training partner staff and lead farmers, documenting field observations and technical results, identifying agronomic risks such as pests, disease and climate shocks, and contributing to programme learning, quality assurance and stakeholder engagement across agricultural value chains.

About you

You are a practical and committed agronomy professional with solid field experience in agricultural production systems and farmer-centred extension. You are able to translate technical knowledge into practical advice for farmers, extension workers and partner organisations, and you are comfortable working closely with producer groups to improve crop productivity, quality and resilience. You have strong facilitation and communication skills, can analyse field challenges and recommend workable solutions, and you are able to document results clearly to support learning and adaptive programme management. You are collaborative, organised and committed to sustainable agriculture, inclusion, accountability and respectful partnership working.

Required qualifications

·        Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Agriculture, Crop Science, Agricultural Extension, or a related field

·        At least 3 years of relevant experience in agronomy, agricultural extension, or value chain development, preferably in coffee, cocoa, vanilla, or related crops

·        Demonstrated experience in farmer training, technical extension, field demonstrations, and promotion of good agricultural practices

·        Knowledge in mainstreaming environment and climate change interventions

·        Strong technical knowledge of crop management, soil health, pest and disease control, harvesting, and post-harvest handling

·        Good oral and written communication skills in English

·        Ability to work collaboratively with programme teams, partners, extension actors, and producer organisations

Merits

·        Knowledge of climate-smart agriculture, sustainable natural resource use, and environmentally responsible production practices

·        Experience working with coffee, vanilla, cocoa, or related agricultural value chains in Uganda

·        Understanding of Uganda’s agricultural production systems and local market dynamics

·        Experience supporting producer organisations, cooperatives, or civil society partners in rural development programmes
