The Website, Editorial and Governance Section within UNICEF’s Division of Global Communication and Advocacy (DGCA) is seeking to hire a consultant with specialized web editorial, Content Management System, and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) expertise as well as knowledge of humanitarian communications and issues related to child rights and youth participation. The consultant will support digital communication and content development for Phase I of UNICEF’s “Child Rights, Safety and Inclusion in the Digital Environment” agenda, as well as rapid-response emergency and evergreen content priorities on unicef.org. The “Child Rights, Safety and Inclusion in the Digital Environment” area of work focuses on advancing children’s rights in the digital environment, including issues related to digital governance, artificial intelligence, online safety, platform accountability, children’s data rights, social media, digital inclusion, and the participation of parents, children and young people in decisions shaping digital spaces. The agenda requires the development of public-facing digital content that translates complex policy, advocacy and research materials into clear, engaging and accessible web products for global audiences.

How can you make a difference?
The consultant will support digital communication and content development for Phase I of UNICEF’s “Child Rights, Safety and Inclusion in the Digital Environment” agenda, as well as rapid-response emergency and evergreen content priorities on unicef.org.
In addition, the consultancy will contribute to UNICEF’s broader web communications & humanitarian through the development of selected emergency-related editorial products supporting humanitarian response communications and evergreen content that strengthens key institutional, thematic and programme-related sections of unicef.org. The assignment requires superior editorial and writing skills, demonstrated expertise in web writing, content strategy, search optimization and emerging digital discoverability practices. All products developed under the consultancy will incorporate Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) approaches to strengthen visibility, discoverability and audience engagement across traditional search engines and AI-assisted search environments. The consultant will work closely with relevant Communication, Advocacy and Media focal points in New York, attending in-person events and workshops.

Minimum requirements:
- Education: Master's degree in Communications, Journalism, Digital Communications, International Relations, Development Studies, Public Affairs, Marketing, or a related field.
- Work Experience: Minimum five years of progressively responsible professional experience in digital and editorial communications, content strategy, journalism, or a related field.
- Experience supporting communication products during humanitarian emergencies and/or working in fast-paced news or crisis communication environments is an asset.
- Skills: Exceptional writing, editing and storytelling skills in English is essential.
- Experience planning and producing web landing pages, feature articles, explainer content, campaign pages and other digital products.
- Strong understanding of UNICEF’s digital editorial standards, audience engagement and content strategy. -Ability to work collaboratively with subject-matter experts and translate technical information into content for public audiences.
- SEO, GEO and AEO expertise Demonstrated expertise in Search Engine Optimization (SEO), including keyword research, search intent analysis, metadata optimization and internal linking strategies is essential.
- Familiarity with emerging discoverability practices, including Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO).
- Experience deploying SEO/GEO/AEO tactics effectively within an international, multi-site web environment.
- Experience using analytics and search-performance insights to inform content development and optimization.
- Digital platforms and analytics Experience using Drupal content management systems (CMS) is essential.
- Experience using web analytics and performance measurement tools, including Google Analytics (GA4), is essential.
- Ability to interpret audience analytics and develop actionable content recommendations.
- Language Requirements: Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is an asset.
- Subject area knowledge: Knowledge of child rights, youth participation, international development, digital governance, online safety and related policy and advocacy issues.
