The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is a multilateral development bank whose mission is financing Infrastructure for Tomorrow in Asia and beyond – infrastructure with sustainability at its core. We began operations in Beijing in 2016 and have since grown to 111 approved members worldwide. We are capitalized at USD100 billion and AAA-rated by the major international credit rating agencies. Collaborating with partners, AIIB meets clients’ needs by unlocking new capital and investing in infrastructure that is green, technology-enabled, and promotes regional connectivity.
The Sector and Themes Department A (STA) serves as part of the Bank’s technical core, delivering innovation, value addition and specialized expertise in energy; urban and water; and climate and nature. STA develops technical excellence and financing knowledge for sovereign and nonsovereign operations and performs a forward-looking role in shaping the direction and impact of investment operations. STA operates to ensure the alignment of its coverage with the Corporate Strategy and supports client departments in implementing relevant sector strategies, thematic priorities, and climate commitments. STA also represents the Bank internationally, develops and maintains networks with development partners and other stakeholders, and reinforces AIIB’s reputation as a leading multilateral development institution.
STA is seeking a (Senior) Specialist with expertise in climate change, climate policy and finance, climate risk assessment, and mitigation and adaptation solutions. The position will support advancing AIIB’s climate agenda through operational support, upstream country engagement, policy analysis, and the identification of practical climate solutions for infrastructure investments.
Responsibilities:
- Support the implementation of AIIB’s Paris Agreement alignment commitment throughout the project cycle, including project identification, appraisal, design, implementation, and completion, by providing climate-related inputs to client and project assessments, including consistency with relevant national climate commitments and priorities.

- Conduct climate finance tracking and reporting, as well as monitoring the implementation and effectiveness of agreed climate mitigation, adaptation, and resilience measures and their contribution to project development outcomes.
- Conduct or support project-level climate risk screening and assessment, including physical and transition risks, and identify appropriate mitigation, adaptation, and resilience measures. Work with project teams and clients to identify and help realize climate-related investment opportunities, including decarbonization, low-carbon and climate-smart technologies, and climate-resilient infrastructure solutions. Where relevant, consider synergies between climate change, nature, and biodiversity, including nature-based solutions that strengthen climate resilience and sustainable development outcomes.
- Collaborate with investment teams, sector specialists, policy officers, economists, environmental and social specialists, and other colleagues to incorporate climate considerations into project design, country programming, policy dialogue, and investment decision-making, and deliver integrated technical solutions.
- Provide upstream support to members and clients on physical and transition climate risks, sectoral decarbonization pathways, climate transition planning, adaptation, and resilience. Contribute to analysis and diagnostics supporting Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), related national climate strategies, and country programming.
- Support the integration of the evolving climate policies, science, technologies, and analytical approaches into AIIB’s climate risk management processes, methodologies, tools, and knowledge resources, including through relevant modeling, data, and digital tools.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of internal methodologies, policies, tools, and guidance related to climate change, drawing on operational experience, applied analysis, international good practices, and multilateral development bank (MDB) approaches.
- Contribute to applied analysis and knowledge development on emerging climate issues, including their economic, policy, financial, and infrastructure implications, and translate findings into practical recommendations for AIIB’s operations, policies, strategies, and country engagement.
- Support Bank-wide capacity building and knowledge sharing on climate change and related environmental and sustainability issues.
- Share operational experience, lessons learned, and emerging good practices to strengthen institutional knowledge and continuously improve climate-related practices.
- Contribute to AIIB’s engagement with development partners, other MDBs, international forums, and relevant technical networks to exchange knowledge, share good practices, and advance collaboration on climate-related issues.
