UNICEF works in 190 countries and territories to protect the rights of every child. UNICEF has spent 70 years working to improve the lives of children and their families. Defending children's rights throughout their lives requires a global presence, aiming to produce results and understand their effects. UNICEF believes all children have a right to survive, thrive and fulfill their potential – to the benefit of a better world.

For every child, hope.

The UNICEF Internship Programme offers qualified and eligible students at both Headquarters (HQ) and Country Offices (CO) the unique opportunity to acquire direct practical experience in UNICEF's work and the United Nations system under the direct supervision of experienced UNICEF staff.

Background and purpose:

In 2016, due to a reduction in allocations from the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), UNICEF has experienced serious resource constraints to fund its ongoing HIV programme.  In order to mitigate the budgetary reductions and to reorient the UNICEF response to children and AIDS programming, the HIV/AIDS Section developed in 2017 a Resource Mobilization Strategy (RMS) to strengthen its position as a partner of choice for children's and adolescent’s HIV/AIDS-related outcomes among governments/public as well as private philanthropic actors around the world. The RMS advocates for better collaboration of the section with the Private Fundraising and Partnerships Division (PFP) and the Public Partnership Division (PPD) for sustainable partnerships, and mobilization of flexible and predictable resources for the UNICEF’s Strategic Plan HIV/AIDS results within the larger 2030 SDG agenda.

Since then, the HIV/AIDS Section has undertaken a number of initiatives and actions to implement the RMS. An Operational Plan has been developed and shared as part of the Regional Adviser’s meeting in May 2017. At the same time, the Section hosted its first Partner Meeting together with PPD to share its strategic vision with partners including the donor community and consult on the way forward. Parallel to that a number of other actions have taken place to make the HIV/AIDS Programme more visible to donors and explore options for support and collaborations with traditional funders.

To better outline the scope of investments and why partners should invest in UNICEF, the HIV/AIDS Section should be able to regularly conduct and update its donor landscape analyses, identify new partners that can make things happen and use current partnerships to advance the cause. In addition, since donors network with each other, the Section needs real-time intelligence on what donors are thinking, streamlining communication between UNICEF offices, and bottom up mechanisms that enable regional/global multi-platform proposals that match donor country priorities.
