Organizational Setting

The objective of the Department of Nuclear Energy (NE) is to foster the efficient and safe use of nuclear power by supporting interested Member States in\: improving the performance of nuclear power plants, the nuclear fuel cycle, and the management of nuclear wastes; catalysing innovation in nuclear power and fuel cycle technologies; developing indigenous capabilities around the world for national energy planning; deploying new nuclear power plants; preserving and disseminating nuclear information and knowledge; and advancing science and industry through improved operation of research reactors.

The department has a dynamic, participative and interactive operating environment with inputs received from the Board of Governors, the General Conference, policy and decision-makers, and technical counterparts in Member States and the international development community.

The Division of Nuclear Power comprises the Nuclear Power Engineering Section, the Nuclear Power Technology Development Section, the Nuclear Infrastructure Development Section and the INPRO (International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles) Section. The Division provides core engineering, technological, human resource development and management support to interested Member States in the field of nuclear power.

The Nuclear Infrastructure Development Section helps Member States to have a better understanding of the requirements needed for implementing nuclear power programmes, to enhance their capabilities associated with the construction of their first nuclear power plant or new nuclear power plants, to enhance their abilities to develop the necessary infrastructure for introducing nuclear power on safe and sustainable manner, and to expand the use of an internationally recognized approach for the introduction of nuclear power, including a harmonized framework and qualitative data, through coordination throughout the IAEA.


Main Purpose

As a key member of the project management team, led by the Section Head, the Senior Nuclear Engineer (Infrastructure) manages projects, develops international guidelines, develops and implements new programmes on training, assists Member States to enhance the nuclear energy program and provides technical assistance at the request of Member States, support the Section head in leading the operations within the section.


Role

The Senior Nuclear Engineer (Infrastructure) is\: (1) project manager (2) a scientific secretary, plans and leads complex Technical Meetings. (3) a mission leader, plans and leads complex review missions, and; (4) a technical and project officer, evaluates, coordinates and implements complex Technical Cooperation (TC) projects, and promotes, co-ordinates and evaluates complex Projects in the area of development of nuclear power infrastructure programme, (5) Coordinator of country technical officers.


Functions / Key Results Expected

• Manage projects as part of the nuclear infrastructure programme implementation.
• Plans and leads complex missions to Member States including preparatory and follow up visits, and the assessment of their needs; provides technical input and coordinates the preparation of mission reports.
• Coordinates within the section and with other internal providers the implementation of the planned activities.
• Evaluates complex projects, develops actions plans and plans, organizes and participates in seminars, workshops, expert missions and training courses.
• Influences and develops partnerships with other technical experts to form consensus views on the main challenges with a country.
• Conducts complex studies and assessments related to issues and trends, including INIR missions. Develops international recommendations and guidance on nuclear energy with a view to addressing Member States' specific needs.
• Builds and maintains strategic partnerships and alliances with a wide range of stakeholders in Member States to promote the establishment of a nuclear energy framework.
• Organizes international meetings, workshops, training courses.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

 

• Master's Degree - Advanced degree in engineering or physics

• Ten years of experience in a relevant field of activity.
• Experience as a manager in a technical field of an operating organization, regulatory body or in a technical support organization.
• Experience in lecturing, mentoring or supporting human resources development.
• Experience in the Milestones approach and familiarity with IAEA activities.
• Experience in working in sensitive nuclear energy data environments and the ability to balance business needs and energy requirements.
• Experience to operate effectively across organizational boundaries and the ability to establish and maintain effective partnerships and working relations in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

• Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.


Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $84721 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 40751, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance
