Organizational Setting
 
The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) formulates and implements the IAEA's nuclear safety and security programme, which encompasses the IAEA's activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure, and responds to the needs of its Member States related to nuclear safety and nuclear security.

The Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety develops and maintains standards for radiation protection, radioactive waste safety, and safety in the transport of radioactive material that enable the beneficial uses of radiation to be exploited while ensuring appropriate protection of workers, the public, patients and the environment. It also assists Member States in the implementation of these standards and provides related services.


The Radiation Safety and Monitoring Section is responsible for the delineation of an international programme to protect workers, patients and the public from all types of exposure to natural or artificial radiation, in line with the most recent scientific knowledge and information. The Section is also responsible for the provision of radiation safety technical services to staff members and experts who may be exposed to ionizing radiation as a result of activities conducted by the IAEA.
 
 
Main Purpose
 
Under the supervision of the Head of the Radiation Safety Technical Services Unit, the Consultant provides advice and applies best practices in individual and workplace monitoring with a focus on internal dosimetry, and training of occupationally exposed workers. The Consultant is also expected to analyze data and prepare reports and procedures.
 
 
Functions / Key Results Expected
 
To provide specialized technical support and expertise to the Unit Head in the development and providing the IAEA radiation safety training programme for IAEA occupationally exposed workers, and assist in commencing of the implementation of selected novel dosimetry techniques and detectors to be introduced in the internal as well as external monitoring, inter alia\:

• analyses systematic and field uncertainties
• evaluation of the effectiveness of selected routine internal dosimetry programmes and provide advice on internal monitoring needs for individuals exposed to radiation.
• assessments and uncertainty analyses for whole body/organ counting and for measurements of radionuclides in urine, faeces, saliva and nasal mucous
 
 
Qualifications and Experience
 
  • Advanced University Degree - natural or engineering sciences. A combination with health physics education highly desired.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in radiation protection, radiation control and radiation dosimetry, with at least 3 years of experience in internal dosimetry.
  • Demonstrated experience in operational laboratory environments including radiation measurements, uncertainty analysis, and dose assessment.
  • Experience with development of dose evaluation methods using voxel phantoms models and Monte Carlo method to whole-body counter calibration.
  • Experience with external as well as internal dose evaluations.
  • Experience with working on radiation dosimetry studies at the international level an asset.
  • Experience with the development of prediction models for ambient dose equivalent rates an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) an asset.

     
Remuneration
 
The remuneration for this consultancy is a daily fee of up to a maximum of € 300, based on qualifications and experience. In case duty travel is required within the assignment, a daily subsistence allowance (DSA) and travel costs are provided. Health coverage and pension fund are the responsibility of the incumbent.
 
 
NOTE\: The incumbent may perform his/her work in areas involving exposure to radioactive materials. Therefore, as an Occupationally Exposed Worker, he/she must be medically cleared by VIC Medical Service and is subject to an appropriate radiation and health monitoring programme, in accordance with the IAEA's Radiation Safety Regulations.
