If you are a committed, creative professional and are passionate about making a lasting difference for children, the world's leading children's rights organization would like to hear from you.

For 70 years, UNICEF has been working on the ground in 190 countries and territories to promote children's survival, protection and development. The world's largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments.

Background & Rationale

Depression is the leading cause of disability, and self-harm is among the leading cause of death among boys and girls 15-19 years of age[1]. However, adolescent mental health and well-being have often been overlooked. During the SDG period, mental health is taking an important place in the global health agenda. SDG target 3.4 aims at reducing premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention, treatment and promotion of mental health and well-being.

Having data on adolescents’ mental health prevalence and risk factors is an essential component for appropriate planning and programming and for identification of populations at higher risk of mental health among adolescents. For this, we are embarking on a road map of data collection for mental health among adolescents for which an initial step will be to have a proper mapping of currently available measurement tools including data results.

In addition, WHO estimated in the 2017 Global Accelerated Action for the Health of Adolescents (AA-HA!) that pregnancy complications are the top cause of death among girls aged 15–19[i]. The 2016 Lancet Commission on Adolescent Health highlights a wide range of social, economic and health consequences stemming from adolescent pregnancy and early age of marriage. These factors include reduction in women’s life choices including educational achievement and income earning opportunities, and negative impacts on the health and development of the children of adolescent mothers[ii]

Therefore, as part of UNICEF’s agenda on adolescents’ health it is imperative to further analysis and provide evidence that contributes to the understanding of the provision of maternal health services for adolescent mothers as well as on the status and risk factors related to adolescents mental health
