The CERN Summer Student Program offers undergraduate and junior post-graduate students of physics, computing and engineering a unique opportunity to join in the day-to-day work of research teams participating in experiments at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. Beyond the outstanding first-class scientific value of their stay, the selected students will find working in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment an extremely enriching personal experience. It is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make valuable and long lasting contacts with other students and scientists from all over the World.
 
In addition to the work in the experimental teams, Summer Students attend a series of lectures specially prepared for them. Several scientists and engineers from around the world share their knowledge about a wide range of topics in the fields of theoretical and experimental particle physics, engineering and computing. Visits to the CERN facilities are also part of the Programme, as well as discussion sessions and workshops. Attendance requires a presence of 8 weeks on site and the possible dates of stay are the following:
11 June to 03 August (covering entire lecture period)
18 June to 10 August (covering entire lecture period)
25 June to 17 August (covering entire lecture period)
02 July to 24 August (in exceptional circumstances only)

Role Description

A limited number of studentships are available during the European summer period only. CERN financial support may also be offered to students who are nationals of countries that are not Member States of CERN.

In addition to the work in the experimental and engineering teams, the selected students are required to attend a series of lectures. Scientists from around the world share their knowledge about a wide range of topics in the fields of theoretical and experimental particle physics, engineering and computing. Students are also required to complete a report at the end of their studentship.

Eligibility conditions

You are NOT a national of a CERN Member State or of: Cyprus, India, Pakistan, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey or Ukraine. Nationals of a CERN Member State or of one of these Associate Member States should apply to the MS programme.

  • You are a university-level undergraduate (at least third year students) or at the start of post-graduate studies.
  • You will remain registered as a student during your stay at CERN. If you expect to graduate in the European summer 2018, you are also eligible to apply.
  • You have not worked at CERN before with any other status (Technical Student, Trainee, User...) for more than 3 months.
  • You have a good knowledge of English; knowledge of French would be an advantage.

Required documents: You are requested to upload TWO RECENT reference letters from your professors, as well as your latest Grades' Transcripts and a recent CV in English or French in order to be considered for selection.

Once your application has been submitted, you will receive an acknowledgment of receipt which contains a link. You must forward this link to your two referees so that they can upload their recommendation letter.

What We Offer

Those students with CERN financial support:

  • You will receive a subsistence allowance to cover the cost of accommodation and meals in the Geneva area for a single person.
  • The CERN Housing Service will assist you in finding accommodation on, or near the site of the laboratory.
  • A limited number of travel scholarships will be available (on a lump sum basis).

Selection Procedure

Candidates who meet the eligibility criteria and have completed their application before the deadline will pass to the next step of the selection process. The final selection results will be communicated to the candidates at the end of April.

Un nombre très limité de stages est disponible pendant la période d'été uniquement. Le CERN accueille et finance des étudiants qui sont ressortissants des pays non Membres de l'Organisation.

En plus d'un séjour d'un intérêt scienti¿que de premier plan, les étudiants sélectionnés auront l'occasion de vivre une expérience très enrichissante en travaillant dans un milieu international où se combinent de multiples disciplines. Ils doivent participer aux cours dispensés pendant les deux mois du stage et soumettre un rapport de stage à la fin de leur séjour.

Conditions d'éligibilité

  • Vous n'êtes pas ressortissant d'un des Etats Membres du CERN ou de Chypre, de l'Inde, de la Serbie, de la Slovénie, du Pakistan,  de la Turquie ou de l'Ukraine
  • Vous êtes inscrit(e) en tant qu'étudiant(e) universitaire (être au moins en 3e année d'études)
  • Vous garderez le statut d'étudiant durant votre période de stage au CERN. Les étudiant(e)s qui seront diplômé(e)s pendant l'été européen 2018 sont également admissibles.
  • Vous n'avez jamais travaillé au CERN avec un autre statut (par ex. en tant que 'USER', stagiaire...) pour une période supérieure a 3 mois
  • Vous avez une bonne connaissance de l'anglais et une connaissance du français serait un avantage.

Références: Veuillez noter que vous devez attacher DEUX lettres de recommandation récentes de vos professeurs, ainsi qu'un relevé de notes et un CV récent en anglais ou français afin de répondre aux exigences du comité de sélection. Une fois votre candidature envoyée, vous recevrez un accusé de réception contenant un lien. Vous devrez faire suivre ce lien à vos deux personnes de référence pour leur permettre de soumettre leur lettre de recommandation.

Nous offrons

Les étudiants financés par le CERN:

  • Vous recevrez une allocation de subsistance pour couvrir vos dépenses de logement et de repas dans la région Genevoise (pour une seule personne).
  • Vous recevrez une subsistance forfaitaire pour aider aux frais de voyage.
  • Le service du Logement du CERN vous aidera à trouver un logement sur le domaine de l'Organisation ou à proximité.

Sélection

Les candidats qui remplissent les critères d'éligibilité et qui ont envoyé leur candidature avant la date limite passeront à la prochaine étape du processus de séléction.

Les résultats finaux seront communiqués aux candidats fin avril.
