 Background

 

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) has been providing relief and development services in the Horn of Africa since 1997. DRC has worked in Yemen since 2008 responding to the protection, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene promotion (WASH) and assistance needs of IDPs, migrants, children and local communities in collaboration with key national and international agencies.

 

Description

DRC Yemen is seeking an experienced WASH Engineer to manage construction and rehabilitation activities in Amant Al-Asimah. Cholera WASH Engineer is critical to DRC humanitarian response to internal displacement and local community in Yemen. With DRC expecting that the post holder with be qualified and possess engineering skills, knowledge and attitude to be immediately effective in the field. These include the active involvement and the full participation by all authorities and community leaders/members, paying special attention to women. The WASH Engineer will report to the Project Coordinator.

Key responsibilities

  • With the WASH coordinator, coordinate and work with local government institutions, non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations and local communities in order to ensure the smooth execution of water & sanitation infrastructure activities.
  • Participate in baseline assessments of community WASH infrastructure, including community water points and sewage system.
  • Conduct technical assessments of selected WASH infrastructure identified for rehabilitation
  • Prepare technical intervention designs and BOQs.
  • Assist the WASH Coordinator in preparing contracts and supervising contracted works to ensure compliance with technical requirements and schedules.
  • Monitor ongoing projects and prepare for hand-over of completed works to communities and local authorities.
  • Responsible to monitor the daily work process including the preparation technician contracts and insure the planned quantity of water is provides in the right way.
  • Facilitate water testing activities to ensure water quality improvements and sustainability over time.
  • Coordinate and follow-up the water treatment at all levels and at water sources in particular. 
  • Liaise with community water management committees in areas where WASH infrastructure is being rehabilitated to help ensure local ownership and assist in developing sustainable mechanisms for operations and maintenance.
  • Ensure accordance with WHO standards and local gender-related sensitivities.

     

    Skills and requirements

  • BSc degree in civil engineering.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience in designing and implementing infrastructure works.
  • Strong social/diplomacy skill.
  • Self-motivated and able to work with a minimum of guidance.
  • Very good English spoken & written skills.
  • INGO experience preferred.
