Interpret/Translate Analyst

Background

The National Interpret/Translation Analyst works under direct supervision of the Head of office, providing necessary interpretation/translation support to the OCHA Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (ROMENA). The National Interpret/Translation Analyst will perform assigned translation tasks from English to Arabic and vice versa, in a timely, accurate and consistent manner. S/he will also be required to perform quality control and proof reading of translated documents and ensure appropriate prioritization of workload. S/he will also provide simultaneous translations during meetings, training programs and workshops as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

Translation

  • Manage translation requests coming from country offices, head-quarters, etc. in terms of priority, sensitivity and resources;
  • Manage outsourced translation services and external translation services by requesting, recommending and supervising qualified translators/interpreters for assistance when required;
  • Proofread documents  translated by outsourced translation services or as provided by other UN offices and as required;
  • Ensuring a high standard of accuracy, consistency and faithfulness to the spirit, style and nuances of the languages translated;
  • Ensure optimal respect of deadlines;
  • Provide simultaneous interpretation from English to Arabic and vice versa at conferences, meetings and as requested and/or required;
  • Observe established terminologies and usages, particularly those prevailing in the UN system; ensure, as far as possible, consistency with other translated publications using the same terminology;
  • Identify and keep abreast of new terminology pertaining and submit new terminology for the consideration of the office;
  • Use all sources of reference, information and consultation relevant to the text at hand and carry out any research required;
  • Act as part of the editorial team within the office and participate in preparing/reviewing the content of ROMENA’s information products (flyers, brochure, fact sheets, electronic pages and accounts,and other reports).
  • Performs other managerial tasks related to the translation team with in the office.

  • Attend relevant meetings and prepare records of meetings where appropriate;

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Advanced university degree in English language literature and/or translation/interpretation from a recognized institution. A Bachelor degree in English language literature and or translation/interpretation from a recognized institution in conjunction with additional 2 years of experience in the area of translation field of work may be accepted.

Experience:

2 years of functionally-related professional experience is required. Experience of working for an international organization is essential, preferably in a UN agency. Proven experience in the usage of computers and Microsoft Office software packages is required (MS Word, Excel, etc). Experience in the usage of graphic and layout software is an asset (Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, etc).

Mastering of English and Arabic
