1.  Organizational context
 
a.  Organizational Setting
The position is located in the Division for the Judicial Administration of Intellectual Property, Office of the Legal Counsel.  The Division is responsible for directing and coordinating WIPO’s systematic approach to international cooperation in the area of judicial administration of intellectual property.
 
b.  Purpose Statement
The incumbent assists the Acting Head in conceptualizing and implementing the work program of the Division for the Judicial Administration of Intellectual Property.   
 
c.  Reporting Lines
The incumbent works under the supervision of Acting Head, Division for the Judicial Administration of Intellectual Property
 
2.   Duties and responsibilities
 
The incumbent will perform the following principal duties\:
 

(a)  In preparation of WIPO meetings for judiciaries organized by the Division, including the annual forum for intellectual property judges, draft initial memos, develop programs and supporting documents, and coordinate speaker participation and presentations;

(b)  Support the establishment of strategic partnerships with Member State judiciaries and judicial academies, developing and maintaining contacts with courts and judicial institutes, as well as other relevant organizations;

(c)  In support of the Division’s judicial capacity building activities, prepare draft programs and information papers, facilitate experts’ participation, conduct capacity building sessions and deliver presentations;

(d)  Organize the collection, analysis and online publication of information on judicial systems, jurisprudence and empirical data on judicial activities;

(e)  Undertake legal research related to judicial administration of intellectual property and coordinate the preparation of draft resource tools and publications for judges, in particular addressing areas that raise novel intellectual property adjudication issues;

(f)  Liaise and help ensure the coordination with relevant WIPO Divisions providing judicial capacity building, with a view to strengthening complementarity, building synergies and achieving a coherent, systematic, Organization-wide approach to judicial capacity building;

(g)  Perform other related duties as required.

 

3.    Requirements
 
Education
       Essential
       First-level university degree in law or otherwise eligibility to practice as an attorney, preferably with a specialization in intellectual property law. An advanced university degree in law may be accepted in lieu of two years of experience.
Experience
       Essential
       At least six years of relevant professional work experience in the area of law, preferably through court experience and in intellectual property law.
       Desirable
       Prior experience as a court clerk.
Languages
       Essential
       Excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken), including ability to draft legal texts.
       Desirable
       Good knowledge of Spanish.  Knowledge of other UN languages.
Job-related competencies
       Essential
Good knowledge of the legal issues of intellectual property law, in particular in relation to judicial systems and jurisprudence.
Excellent analytical and legal drafting skills.
Organizational skills with the ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure and to respect deadlines.
Sound political judgment.
Discretion and good diplomatic skills.
Competent user of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and the internet.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to maintain effective partnerships and working relations in a multi-cultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
