ABOUT THE JOB
The Vocational Skills Lead Instructor will oversee the delivery of high quality vocational skills training to selected refugees in skills including electrical wiring, solar power technology, plumbing and Mobile phones and Electronics maintenance. The holder of the position will directly supervise the training and preparation of learners in Kalobeyei settlement to prepare them for for Grade Test examination administered by the relevant government institution. The Lead Instructor will directly supervise Instructors for specifics trades.
YOUR MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Administration and Operation
- Ensure development, customizing and delivery of technician curriculum in electrical wiring/installation, solar power technology, plumbing, phone and electronic repairs for learners in Kalobeyei settlement and host community
- Ensure timely preparation of course outline
- Ensure maintenance of daily class attendance register
- Design and preparation of materials, resources and information to be used in respect of programme delivery
- Develop and employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students.
- Coordinate with the examination and certification body (e.g. NITA for grade test and certification)
- Guidance and skills development to ensure that learning standards are maintained and improved
- Keep financial, participants and training records and send weekly reports to the Training officer
- Develop annual procurement plan and timely procurement of materials/items related to various skills training
- Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs.
- Encourage the development of communication skills and higher order thinking skills through appropriate assignments to the students
- Develop and explain methods that fairly measure student progress toward student learning outcomes.
- Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently and return student work promptly to promote maximum learning
- Coordinate the advertisement, interviews and selection of the students to be trained on different vocational skills.
- Assisting in preparation of sector operation plans/ work plans and reviews
- Prepare activity plans and budget for activity implementation.
- Prepare weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
- Identify existing gaps in the community, suitable sustainable innovative projects for co-financing and assist with preparation of proposal and reports to donors
- Assist in managing expenditure of technical activities related to vocational skills training
- Assist in compiling of all monitoring information on a regular basis and documentation of lessons learnt from field visits and project activities.
Human Resource Management
- Supervise the work of the vocational training instructors and other staff assigned;
- Set the performance objectives and conduct timely performance reviews,
- Liaise with the Kakuma HR to deal with emerging HR management issues;
- Ensure effective lesson planning, and effective content delivery;
Vocational Training Centre Support
- Manage the installation and maintenance of operating equipment and fixtures;
- Providing support, including procedural documentation and relevant reports;
- Ensure repairs and maintenance of tools and equipment in the vocational training centre;
- Conduct routine safety checks on training facilities.
- Undertake any other duty assigned by the supervisor
Liaison/coordination and partnership
- Serve as the liaison with stake holders and relevant Government of Kenya departments – from the location to divisional levels
- Promote collaboration and synergy between the DRC, host community groups, and refugee groups in the Kakuma and Kalobeyei refugee camps.
- Participate in the camp-level inter-agency Livelihoods Working Group;
- Organize and coordinate related stakeholders meetings/workshops/forums to enable the active, free and meaningful participation of project beneficiaries in the design and implementation of project activities within the refugee camps and host community
- Ensure and maintain mutual linkages with the County and District offices especially with any related line ministries to enhance their understanding of program needs in the assigned area of operation.
- Promote collaboration and synergy between the DRC host community project and similar projects/groups in Kakuma and Kalobeyei Settlement
Training/Meeting/ Forums
- Prepare and conduct community sensitization forums/meetings with community leaders and beneficiaries in the refugee and host community set up
- Document lessons learned from training activities, community meeting and assist in preparing training reports
- Design, Monitoring and Evaluation activities
- Prepare and apply appropriate tools to be used for monitoring and reporting on learners progress
- Participate in regular lessons learned feedback sessions with the project team
- Document success stories and project milestones as well as best practices
- Conduct other duties as assigned by the supervisor and/or management
ABOUT YOU
- Technician diploma or degree in Engineering/ Technology Education specializing in electrical Technology or Plumbing Technology or Welding technology or related field from a regionally accredited institution
- 4 years of industry experience
- Experience in managing Community Based Vocational skills project or teaching in a technical college.

Salary and conditions will be in accordance with Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for National Staff
