Purpose of the post

The primary mandate of the Trends and Analysis unit is to leverage all sources of information, including open source material, social media data, and other official data or information on a specific topic or target to complement the internal decision makers’ reading of the conflict environment and media landscape.

The main purpose of this Information Analyst position is to provide ICRC decision makers with valuable insight on social media and traditional media trends, challenges and opportunities based on information and data available across a wide range of media sources.

By developing insights and strategic recommendations, the information analyst contributes to the ICRC's understanding of its positioning, presence and performance in the media landscape, in order to help the organization align its public profile with its operational objectives and shape its reputation.

The information analyst uses structured methodologies and techniques appropriate to the topic and applies specialized subject matter expertise to guiding efforts. S/He develops reports tailored to users’ needs which can range from tactical to strategic levels, including actionable leads, complex written products, and formal or informal briefings.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Brand monitoring, early warning and e-reputation. Monitor and analyze public information and conversations in relation to ICRC and/or the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Send alerts and mobilize internal stakeholders accordingly on reputation’s issues, risks and opportunities. 
  • COM evaluation. Collect, analyze and measure agreed public communication key performance indicators using media and social media data, identify key trends and together with communication/campaign colleagues draw conclusions, and develop recommendations on public communication tactics and strategies.
  • KPIs. Collaborate with COM PR, COM DIGITAL, and Regional Communication Centers (RCC) to define indicators of performance for regular measurement and for major media / social media / campaign activity.
  • Measurement. Provide a quantitative and qualitative overview of the ICRC social media efforts that matter most to the communication and REM department’s decision makers, in the form of a quarterly review, especially regarding communication campaigns.
  • Impact. Contribute to the qualitative analysis of communication and campaign activity in collaboration with colleagues across COM / CORP
  • Benchmarking. Compare and contextualize the ICRC performance on social media with peer organizations.
  • Identifying influencers. Identify key digital influencers through social network analyses and/or regular social listening.
  • Network. Set up, develop, coordinate and leverage a network of media and social media analysts in the RCCs (blue line) to provide regional and global reading of ICRC visibility. Actively provide advice, support and guidance to delegations regarding their ICRC coverage monitoring system and promote interaction amongst delegations and with HQ.
  • Crisis. Work closely with TRAK information analysts and data scientists during emergencies and other specific events in order to enhance synergy in approach and output
  • Visualizations.  Produces charts, graphs, infographics, dashboards, etc. to support knowledge acquisition and decision-making.
  • Training. Actively follow developments for the profession and the emergence of social media platforms. Explore and test new tools and opportunities. Develop customized methodology for research and monitoring that caters to ICRC needs. Participate in coaching / training sessions for the delegations in the visibility and evaluation sphere.
  • Develop and manage relationships with service providers and partners, including renegotiating terms of contracts when necessary.

Education and experience required

  • University degree or postgraduate studies (marketing,  communication, international relations,  information or social sciences)
  • 3 years of experience as an analyst or researcher in the field of social media
  • Experience with analyzing and evaluating information to assess audiences’ perception, issues, trends’ reading, risks’ identification and opportunities’ spotting in relation with public communication priorities but including also other internal stakeholder’s needs.
  • Professional Experience in working with social media monitoring tools such as Brandwatch, Radian6, Hootsuite and Simply Measured)
  • Professional Experience in working with data and data analysis tools such as Tableau, Power BI and Microsoft Excel
  • Very good written and oral communication skills (English and French). German is an asset

Desired profile and skills

  • Experience with the ICRC communication activities or another humanitarian organization an asset.
  • Excellent analytic skills with the proven ability to use monitoring tools and provide analysis consistently on performance metrics
  • Knowledge and experience in conducting Social Network Analysis
  • Knowledge of Python
  • Sensitivity for privacy and data protection issues
  • Experience in coaching or adult training an asset
  • Multitasker capable of working under pressure and respecting tight deadlines
  • Ability to work with a high level of autonomy but also as part of a team
  • Meticulous with an eye for detail, quality and accuracy
  • Genuine interest in humanitarian field, strategic and global issues
