UNICEF hosts the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI). UNGEI is a multi-stakeholder partnership and works at the global, regional and country level. It is committed to promoting gender equality in and through education and the empowerment of girls and young women. UNGEI partners unite within this common umbrella and work together to harness the benefits of collaborative advantage by:

  1. linking work at multiple levels – global, regional and country;
  2. strengthening a partnership approach by bringing actors with diverse skills and competencies to the table;
  3. promoting evidence and good practice through gender analysis tools for the education sector and other related sectors;
  4. policy advocacy that contributes to a common voice within the education development community and building a communications platform supported by the UNGEI Secretariat.

In 2014, UNGEI, in collaboration with UNESCO led the establishment of the Global Working Group to End School-Related Gender-Based Violence (SRGBV) with the mandate ‘to strengthen coordinated, collaborative, accelerated and expanded global, regional and country-level responses to eliminate SRGBV.’ The UNGEI Secretariat provides leadership and technical support in coordinating the Working Group, in collaboration with 40 member organizations representing key civil society, bilateral and multilateral organizations and research institutions.

How can you make a difference?

The Secretariat seeks an individual who will provide support in moving forward its knowledge management, advocacy and evidence building priorities, particularly expanding to other regional networks. Under the supervision of the Coordinator of the Global Working Group to end SRGBV, the Education and Gender intern will gain valuable skills by contributing to evidence building, developing policy & advocacy materials and messages on SRGBV and will contribute to building the resource and evidence base for UNGEI and its partners.  The intern will support and ensure that UNGEI’s positions, plans and approaches are based on strategic analysis, programming evidence, and current knowledge of SRGBV trends and issues.

In particular, the Education and Gender Intern would contribute to the following activities:

Support promotion of evidence based approaches and good practice:

  • Conduct a desk review of existing research and programmes addressing issues of violence, gender and early childhood development
  • Produce a short briefing note presenting the key findings of the review and an analysis of the main issues or problems
  • Develop materials (PowerPoints, brief technical notes) on specific topics related to SRGBV, drawing from existing tools and resources, to support implementers at country level
  • Support with data collection (key informant interviews), consolidation and analysis of data generated from a market analysis for web-based users of SRGBV material

Technical support for policy advocacy

  • Provide background research, synthesis, fact checking and data analysis for policy briefs and discussion papers on themes related to gender, education and SRGBV

Knowledge and information management

  • Produce a fortnightly resource list of the latest studies, news articles, policy papers and reports on SRGBV and gender and education
  • Review existing material on the website, identify gaps and locate current material, identifying new sources and exploring open source academic resources.
  • Support delivery of a webinar series on SRGBV
  • Contribute to the SRGBV newsletter

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate, Master’s program graduate or Ph.D. degree programme or have graduated within the past two years in education, social sciences, gender and/or international development.
  • Interest in international development and previous experience or study in gender and education.  
  • Strong analytical and writing skills with ability to synthesize large amounts of information (quantitative and qualitative) and produce succinct and effective policy documents.
  • Knowledge of software for visual media and presentations desirable
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

Location:
The internship will be based in the NY headquarters office with the possibility of up to 50% home-based work

Duration:
This will be a part time / full time internship, the duration will be for 3-6 months, with an ideal start date of 1st June and an opportunity to extend to 6 months if desirable to the post holder and Secretariat.

Salary/Payment:
In accordance to UNICEF’s guidelines, interns will be paid a stipend of US $1,500 per month for full-time work; part-time internship will be paid accordingly. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship. UNICEF is not responsible for obtaining any necessary visas.

Insurance:
UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern’s service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrolment in a health/accident plan prior to start his/her work with the Nutrition Section.

Living Conditions and Working Environment:
The intern will work at UNICEF House, New York.  S/he will work with the UNGEI Secretariat and report to the supervisor of this internship.  S/he is not expected to travel out of this duty station during the assignment. A flexible workspace will be provided. The intern will be expected to participate in Secretariat's meetings, as well as other UNICEF meetings of interest to the student, including the seminar series for UNICEF interns. Guidance will be provided on a regular basis.

Deadline:
The deadline for applications will be 26nd February, UNGEI Secretariat will review the applications and schedule a short phone interview with the shortlisted candidates. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. 

If accepted, the intern will be required to provide a copy of health insurance coverage and to fill out the relevant UNICEF forms on conditions regarding service as an intern.
