UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women ECO Strategic Notes (SN) and Annual Work Plan 2017 (AWP) focuses on supporting the development objectives of the Ethiopia Growth and Transformation Plan (2010/11-2014/15) in relation to Pillar 8 on equity and empowerment as well as being aligned with United Nations Development Assistance Framework (2016 – 2020). The strategic approach and attendant workplan includes UN Women ECO's core principles in leading and promoting coherence within UN system work and supporting regional initiatives given the presence of UN ECA and African Union in Ethiopia. The Country Programme Division under the leadership of the Deputy Country Representative manages the Programme support to Ethiopia including the Joint Programme on Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women working with the government of Ethiopia in 9 Regions and the 2 City Administration, partnerships with donors and UN agencies through the Donor Group on Gender Equality and different UN Theme Groups to enhance gender equality and empowerment of women in Ethiopia.
