Introduction

Applied Physicist in the Experimental Physics Department (EP), Detector Technologies Group (DT), Detector Development Section (DD)

You will join:

  • The Experimental Physics (EP) Department, which carries out basic research in the field of experimental particle physics in a stimulating scientific atmosphere, standing as an important reference for the European physics community. It also contributes to the education and training of young scientists.
  • The Detector Technologies (DT) Group, which is in charge of the development, construction, operation and maintenance of many particle detectors and their technical infrastructure for the different experiments at CERN.
  • The Detector Development (DD) Section, which provides expertise in various fields of detector technologies. It also comprises the operation of several facilities for detector R&D, such as the wire bonding and interconnect facility, and the quality and reliability assurance laboratory, dedicated laboratories for the characterization of semiconductor and gaseous detectors and the EP irradiation facilities.

Functions

As Specialist in Silicon Detectors & Interconnect Technologies in the Detector Development (DD) Section, you will be in charge of the DSF (Departmental Silicon Facility) services and infrastructure, leading a team of highly qualified technicians and providing service to the entire silicon detector community. The DSF facility comprises a wire bonding and interconnect laboratory (BONDLAB), a Quality Assurance and Reliability Testing laboratory (QART-Lab), and a clean room work area for CERN projects building silicon detectors.

The BONDLAB and QART-Lab are service installations providing support to all CERN experiments and projects. The QART-Lab comprises equipment for reliability testing such as climatic chambers and a vibration test stand. It provides expertise for quality assurance and reliability testing on a large variety of components. Activities of the BONDLAB include micro-connections to solid state sensors and to electronics chips.

Furthermore, the work will include future development projects in the area of module assembly, interconnection techniques and quality assurance tests.

You will:

  • Lead the EP Departmental Silicon Facility team with its services and infrastructure, supporting and guiding the expert technician team in the day-to-day operation and be responsible for safety aspects such as radiation safety.
  • Work on future projects in the area of silicon detector development and participate in the quality assurance planning as member of the project team, e.g. the CMS phase 2 tracker upgrade.
  • Manage and operate the QART-Lab service.
  • Initiate and study new developments in the field of assembly and interconnection and carry out R&D activities for future experiments.
  • Study and implement improvements and upgrades in the infrastructure and equipment pool of the DSF.

Qualification required

Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of physics or electronics engineering or equivalent.

  • Experience in quality assurance and reliability testing including the operation of dedicated equipment.
  • Experience in clean room operation or management as well as ESD (Electro Static Discharge) protection would be an advantage.

The technical competencies required for this post are:

  • Quality management: quality assurance and reliability testing of components and complex systems as well as operation of dedicated equipment.
  • Technical infrastructure operation: and maintenance.
  • Assembly of silicon detectors or electronic components.
  • Knowledge of packaging and/or interconnect technologies.

The behavioural competencies required for this post are:

  • Achieving results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
  • Solving problems: producing workable and timely solutions that meet requirements.
