Project Summary:

Intake - Center for Dietary Assessment is a FHI 360 initiative funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). The overarching aim of Intake is to help improve the nutritional status of vulnerable populations by increasing the availability and use of reliable dietary intake data in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). Intake currently has three primary work streams: providing technical assistance services to countries and other entities for the collection, analysis and use of dietary intake data; developing simple, valid measures of diet quality that are appropriate to use with dietary intake data collected in LMICs; and fundraising to demonstrate cross-donor buy-in and foster Center sustainability.

The duration of Intake is November 1, 2016 to January 31, 2021

Position Summary:

The Senior Dietary Survey Advisor for Intake will have primary responsibility for the provision of technical assistance related to the collection, analysis and use of quantitative dietary intake data. As part of this work, the Senior Dietary Survey Advisor will also oversee and have primary responsibility for the development of capacity building tools related to the collection, analysis and use of quantitative dietary intake data. S/he will also contribute to Intake’s activities related to the development of simple metrics of diet quality; as well as to visioning, strategic outreach, and fundraising efforts for Intake.

This position is at least a 50% full-time position with benefits, but the % level of effort can be negotiated up to 100%. The position may require travel up to 30% of the time.

This position may be based in Washington, DC, or could be based remotely.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Lead Intake’s technical assistance and capacity building efforts to countries, civil society organizations and other entities who request Intake support for the collection, analysis and use of quantitative dietary intake data in LMICs.
  • Lead the development of capacity building tools and guidance materials related to the collection, analysis and use of quantitative dietary intake data in LMICs.
  • Provide technical support and input for Intake’s research activities to advance methods to collect, analyze, and use quantitative dietary intake data in LMICs; Lead Intake research activities when appropriate.
  • Provide technical assistance and/or training, when requested, for the use of tools to collect (e.g. mobile devices) and analyze (e.g. CS Dietary, linear programming tools) quantitative dietary data.
  • Contribute to the drafting of Intake reports and publications on topics related to dietary assessment; Lead the preparation of Intake reports and publications, as appropriate.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of policy dialogues around nutrition and agriculture-related issues in LMICs, using analysis from dietary intake surveys as one of the key data inputs.
  • Contribute technical input to the scope, design and execution of activities carried out by sub-contractors.
  • Provide support and input for the design and execution of technical meetings with stakeholder groups, including Intake’s Strategic Advisory Committee.
  • Provide support and input to extend the reach of Intake, to a broader set of stakeholders, including researchers engaged in dietary survey work in the US and Europe
  • Contribute to Intake’s vision, strategy, and fundraising efforts.
  • Contribute content to Intake’s website and annual reporting, as appropriate

Education:

  • Advanced degree in nutrition, public health, biostatistics, epidemiology, economics or a related field; PhD preferred

Experience:

  • At least 11 years of experience carrying out research or providing specialized technical assistance related to nutrition.
  • At least 5 years of experience collecting and analyzing quantitative dietary intake data in multiple contexts. Experience collecting quantitative dietary intake data for large-scale surveys in LMICs is preferred.
  • Experience carrying out pre-survey work in multiple contexts, to develop recipe lists, test portion size estimation tools, and develop and finalize the portion size conversion databases and food composition databases for surveys.
  • Experience working with governments in LMICs strongly preferred.
  • Experience collecting, analyzing and using semi-quantitative dietary data and food frequency data is a plus.
  • Evidence of a strong publication record highly desirable.

Skills:

  • Ability to communicate technically complex information clearly and succinctly.
  • Ability to translate technical material into practical tools and guidance materials.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team of people with different technical backgrounds and varying levels of technical training.
  • Superior presentation skills, both written and oral.
  • Strong background in statistics and data analysis; Proficiency with SPSS, Stata or SAS required. Proficiency with software (e.g. CS Dietary) to process dietary data highly desirable.
  • English fluency is essential and French, Portuguese or Spanish ability preferred.
