UN Women: Advocacy and Campaign Coordinator
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations (UN), works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
Through the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) in Bangkok and a number of country and multi-country offices as well as programme presences across the region, UN Women builds on a long history of support to governments, civil society and other actors to deliver for women and girls.? We advocate for and enhance accountability to enhance women’s political participation and prevent and respond effectively to violence against women. Our economic empowerment programmes seek greater economic security and rights particularly for marginalized groups of women.? Other programmes in Asia and the Pacific involve partnering with women in their efforts to engage in peace and reconstruction efforts, and push for gender equality (GE) provisions integral to preparing for, mitigating and responding to disasters and emergencies. To bolster gender-responsive budgeting and public planning, we assist efforts to monitor the different impacts of budget and policy choices on women and men and to mainstream gender considerations across sectors.
In support of the full, effective and gender-responsive implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the achievement of GE, UN Women recognizes the crucial role of men and boys as equal partners for women’s rights. It also requires an inclusive approach that raise public awareness, political will and resources for ending violence against women and girls (EVAWG), and support different stakeholders -including the private sector- to drive transformative impact on social norms change.
Reporting to the Strategic Partnerships Specialist and the Ending Violence Against Women Programme Manager (50/50%), the Advocacy and Campaign Coordinator will support UN Women ROAP regional outreach and positioning initiatives; coordinate the organization and implementation of related events and campaigns; provide substantive inputs to regional strategic partnerships and advocacy strategies and products; coordinate regional dissemination and campaigning among Country Offices (CO) in the region; and provide technical and coordination support in private sector engagement and donor liaison in related programmes. S/he will understand how effective project coordination will help deliver more impactful and creative external relationships, and better advocacy and campaign services to internal audiences, which will advance the UN Women mission at regional level.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide advocacy/visibility support and coordination for the UNiTE Campaign Secretariat:
- Serve as Regional Campaign Coordinator for the Asia-Pacific UNiTE Campaign Secretariat;
- Represent UN Women APRO at conferences, seminars and meetings on issues related to the work of the UNiTE Campaign in the region;
- Schedule regional inter-agency Asia-Pacific UNiTE meetings, following up on agreed action points as required; Coordinate the preparation, implementation and monitoring of the Asia-Pacific UNiTE Secretariat Annual Work Plan;
- Provide technical inputs to long-term communications plans for the UNiTE initiatives and partnership work; Monitor, analyzed and shared its results across the region, in coordination with relevant colleagues in COs;
- Support the recruitment and supervision of interns and volunteers for outreach events/actions;
- Ensure adequate documentation, reporting and monitoring of advocacy/campaign results, lessons learned and effective approaches in the Asia-Pacific region.
Support regional advocacy and strategic partnerships to prevent Violence against Women and Girls (VAW):
- Facilitate and contribute to South-South knowledge-sharing and dissemination within and beyond the region, through meetings, capacity-building workshops, publications and online and other communications, and documenting results and progress;
- Serve as Youth Focal Point, and maintain up-to-date strategic knowledge of issues in the youth activism landscape, and share information for purposes of planning and direction-setting for UN Women APRO;
- Build and maintain close relationships with current and potential strategic partners, with a focus on regional partnerships with youth, sports and media organizations, to build capacity of key stakeholders and raise public awareness for the prevention of VAWG, the change of social norms, and the promotion of GE;
- Contribute inputs to the development of key publications/material and advocacy products;
- Prepare, review and/or coordinate substantive documents/reports, briefs, speeches, presentations and other advocacy materials on campaigning strategies and results as needed.
Provide advocacy/visibility support and coordination for the HeForShe Solidarity Movement:
- Serve as Regional Campaign Coordinator for the HeForShe Solidarity Movement;
- Represent UN Women APRO at conferences, seminars and meetings on issues related to the work of the HeForShe Movement in the region;
- Support social norms change around positive masculinities, male champions and healthy relationships;
- Provide technical inputs to long-term communications plans for the HeForShe initiatives and partnership work; Monitor, analyzed and shared its results across the region, in coordination with relevant colleagues in COs;
- Support the recruitment and supervision of interns and volunteers for outreach events/actions;
- Ensure adequate documentation, reporting and monitoring, in collaboration with relevant HQ HeForShe and Communications colleagues, of advocacy/campaign results, lessons learned and effective approaches in the Asia-Pacific region.
Enhance social mobilization, outreach and strategic partnerships for GE and women’s empowerment:
- Contribute to promoting UN Women’s visibility through high-level events, including International Women's Day (IWD), 16 Days of Activism and the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW);
- Develop and maintain strategic regional partnerships for UN Women regional campaigning, and coordinate communications and information flow to regional stakeholders;
- Provide technical support to the development of communications plans to reach UN Women regional advocacy goals, in close collaboration with the Communications Unit -at regional and global level-, including working across teams to manage rapid response strategic communications at key initiative moments;
- Ensure that UN Women-coordinated campaigns, including HeForShe and UNiTE, are effectively mainstreamed across UN Agencies and regional partners; build and maintain strong relationships with key inter-agency and partner staff, including in supporting the design and/or implementation of joint UN programmes and events, for UN agencies and regional partners;
- Contribute inputs to the development of key publications/material and advocacy products, as well as content for UN Women APRO social media channels, especially as relates to UNiTE and HeForShe;
- Contribute to the development of regional partnerships, including operationalizing partnerships to advance and develop collaborative programs, and provide demand-driven support for the development of regional strategic partnerships and collaborations at regional/national level;
- Strengthen relationships with regional networks and CSOs in Asia-Pacific, build links and form effective relationships with key allies in business communities and youth movements in the region, to ensure that UN Women work learns from and reflects the dynamism of these initiatives;
- Support the preparation of project/programme field visits and missions related to advocacy, including by identifying major meetings and preparing agendas and briefing documentation, and undertake such field visits as required;
- Support an enhanced regional advocacy, including by analyzing regional trends and key national-level priorities, successes and challenges, as well as supporting the implementation of regional-level studies and research in related areas.

Required Skills and Experience
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Communication, Public Relations, Journalism, Social Science, Development or a related field.
- At least 5 years of progressive professional work experience at national or international level in public relations, communications or advocacy;
- Proven track record in raising the visibility and influence of an organization through effective advocacy strategies;
- Demonstrated experience in organizing advocacy, public outreach and/or strategic partnerships initiatives and high-visibility events, preferably within a development or social marketing context;
- Demonstrated experience in coordinating campaigns to achieve short and long term impact, including through the use of social media;
- Knowledge and/or prior work experience of gender issues and/or EVAW will be a distinct advantage;
- Previous working experience with youth and capacity-building is an asset;
- Demonstrated experience in the use of computers and office/audiovisual software packages, as well as social media/web/audiovisual production; Experience with photography and audiovisual production will be an asset;
- Understanding of the role of the private sector in promoting gender equality will be desirable;
- Work experience in the Asia and the Pacific is an asset;
- Familiarity with the UN system’s rules and procedures will be an advantage.
- Fluency in English is required;
- Knowledge of the other UN official working language is an asset.

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
