REGIONAL RESEARCHER: THAILAND, LAO AND THEMATIC ISSUES

ABOUT THE ROLE

As a research-based campaigning organization, investigating and documenting human rights issues is fundamental to our advocacy and lobbying work. We are looking for a Researcher for Thailand and Lao as well as assigned thematic issues in Southeast Asia and the Pacific to take the lead in initiating human rights research and action by providing contextual and thematic expertise, excellent research skills and sound political judgement.

You'll be required to conduct and co-ordinate research activities, monitor, investigate and analyse political, legal and social developments and human rights conditions, give authoritative advice on these areas, represent Amnesty International to outside stakeholders, including the media, and prepare human rights action materials. You will demonstrate initiative in identifying human rights concerns and opportunities for advocacy by Amnesty International, and will apply a campaign-oriented approach to your work.

ABOUT YOU

With experience of working on human rights issues, you have in-depth knowledge of the political and human rights situation particularly in Thailand and Lao. You have extensive experience working in the region, a strong network of local partners and contacts, and a deep understanding of the challenges and security concerns facing researchers particularly in Thailand and Lao.

You have a background in activism, academia, law, journalism or a related field and have demonstrated the ability to apply sound research methodologies to credibly and rigorously document human rights violations. You are an excellent communicator, with the ability to clearly present facts and ideas orally and in written form. You have knowledge of international human rights standards and familiarity with regional and universal mechanisms for the protection of human rights. A natural collaborator, you will use your expertise and sound political judgement to inform and support your colleagues and partners. Fluency in English is essential, and fluency in Thai or Lao or other local languages would be an added advantage.
