The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) has been given its global mandate by the Executive Board to provide project management and implementation services to the UN agencies, governments, IFIs, NGOs and the private sector. As a central resource for the UN system in project management, public procurement and implementation capacity building, UNOPS is committed to best practices in its core advantages to support partners' development efforts.

In January 2016, the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) entered into a Project Agreement with the Government of the Qinhuangdao City, Hebei Province of China concerning provision of project management and advisory services to the Asia-Pacific Healthcare Demonstration Zone Project. UNOPS agreed to accept this engagement because it falls squarely into UNOPS global mandate given by its Executive Board i.e. providing project implementation services to the UN agencies, Governments, IFIs, NGOs and the Private Sector.

For sustainable developments purpose, UNOPS is leading joint education program between Qinhuangdao City and John Hopkins University. By bringing top educational resources into Asia-Pacific Healthcare Demonstration Zone, Beidaihe will jointly solve challenging human medical conditions that include, but are not limited to, cancer, neurodegeneration, cardiovascular diseases, and reproductive aging. The goal of this alignment is to form an efficient pipeline for the training of the next generation of biomedical researchers and development of new and effective medical treatments, through a seamless integration of discovery, technological advancement, translational research, and clinical validation and implementation.

This position is designed to help the implementing of joint education program from America.



Functional Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance of designated supervisor, the Research Intern will be responsible for conducting industrial research by performing a variety of standard research processes ensuring timely, high quality and accuracy of work. The Research Intern may also provide professional services to support implementation of project.

Primary responsibilities will include the following:

  • Conduct research to support designated supervisor in neuroscience area, specifically in mental health and cognitive science
  • Provide professional research support to designated supervisor in joint education area, conducting case study for successful cases in China and the USA. Also conduct success criteria analysis for joint education program
  • Support the implementation of Second Life Science Summer Summit in 2018 in different perspectives such as speaker inviting and proposal drafting in the USA
  • Coordinate with various internal and external units to ensure all assigned tasks are on track
  • Collect and prepare correspondences, analyses, business documents and presentation materials for supervisor
  • Perform other assignments as assigned by supervisor

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education:

Applicants must be pursuing a university degree, such as Bachelor's, Masters or  PhD, preferably in the field of Business or Health related major, or have graduated from such studies within the last 3 years.  

Experience: 

  • Although no previous professional experience is required for this internship, strong academic/research experience is highly desired.
  • Previous experience  healthcare sector, preferably within the UN is an advantage.
Language requirements:

  • Fluency in English is required

Interns may be eligible for a monthly stipend  from UNOPS provided that they do not receive funds from other institutions. Furthernore, UNOPS may provide a one time travel lumpsum of 500 USD. However, they make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and necessary visa arrangements.

This internship is not designed to lead to a staff position with UNOPS. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.
