 BACKGROUND:

Income and non-financial contribution from private sector (Individuals and Corporates) has consistently grown in Latin America and the Caribbean during past years, becoming the most important source of funding for the programs in the region and helping achieve programmatic goals with the private sector as a development partner; on the other side, contributions from traditional governmental donors have decreased.

UNICEF in the Region needs to adjust to this new environment by improving communication to public, private and intra-organization to showcase the partnerships with the private sector for programs in the region.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

Under the guidance of the Chief Private Sector, and in close collaboration with the Children’s Rights and Business specialist in LACRO, the individual contractor is responsible for developing Reporting and Storytelling products to showcase the impact of the private sector on children programs in the region.

 

MAIN TASKS AND DELIVERABLES

The individual contractor will focus its work to:

  1. Deliver low intensity products such as the public version of the report “Marketing practices in store of F&B companies targeting children and adolescents in LAC” using existing internal reports as input.
  2. Deliver medium intensity products such as a compilation of good practices from UNICEF Country offices and other stakeholders regarding the engagement of the private sector in programs for adolescents
  3. Deliver high intensity fundraising reports that will help UNICEF to fundraise, build multi-stakeholder agreements and create innovative partnerships that will finance UNICEF work in LAC in conjunction with the communication and programmes colleagues

 

Known Deliverables:

Low intensity product:  Low intensity products will not require the production of primary information, they will mainly use existing UNICEF information

 

Example: Public UNICEF draft of the marketing in retail study,

 

Low intensity products will typically include three  sub products:

a)     The main document (20 pages max, in English or spanish); in the case of the marketing example, this will be a document for wider dissemination targeted mostly to retailers and written in English.

b)     Executive summary for the general public (4 pages max, in both Spanish and English) and;

c)     Internal note (4 pages) with guidance for UNICEF country offices interested in working in this agenda

Medium intensity product: Will typically include the development of primary information through desk research, compiling good practices from UNICEF and potentially a handful conversations with external stakeholders

 

EXAMPLE: good practices from UNICEF Country offices and other stakeholders in the agenda of adolescents and private sector.

Medium intensity products will typically include the following sub-products

a)     Methodology proposal, 5 pages max: including tool to collect good practices from (if necessary); Definition of a tentative final report index, timeline proposal.

b)     Desk research: Usually compiles relevant practices and existing studines in 5 pages max. In the case of adolescents and provate sector it includes the compilation of practices from private sector companies and other stakeholders (e.g. IADB, World Bank, NGOs, etc) in the region on the three areas of interest for unicef LAC on Adolescents and private sector.

c)     Summary of conversations with up to 5 stakeholders: including opinions from experts of the region if needed. 5 Pag max.

d)     Development of at least 4 short good practices from UNICEF Country Offices in the region – Maximum of four pages per good practice, in coordination with COs.

e)     Draft and final version of the document, incorporating changes from UNICEF, 20 pages max + annexes.

 

The adolescents and private sector medium intensity product will focus its research in practices that benefit the most marginalized children such as adolescents in conflict with the law, afro-descendants, indigenous adolescents, recipients of cash transfers, etc. One key area of interest is the transition from secondary school to work

 

 

 

High intensity product :

 

Will typically include the development of primary information through desk research, development of interviews with UNICEF colleagues, compiling good practices from UNICEF and potentially a handful conversations with external stakeholders

 

Example: Private Sector regional plan, including the following sub-products

a)     Methodology proposal, 5 pages max: including tool to collect good practices from (if necessary); Definition of a tentative final report index, timeline proposal.

b)     Development of different “stand alone” chapters of the product. In the case of the private sector regional plan it will include the following plans: philatropy, a Private Sector Engagement, corporate fundraising, pledge. Each with a length of 4 pages max

c)      Production of executive summary (1 page) and 5 “boxes” with information

d)     Draft and final version of the document, incorporating changes from UNICEF, 20 pages max + annexes.

 

 

 

Known due dates:

-          Low intensity product “Marketing in retail Study”: July 7th.

-          Medium intensity product “Mapping of adolescents and private sector in LAC” 3 August

Additional deliverables will be based upon needs on basis.

This will be a mixed of 3 types of products:

-          Additional low, medium or high intensity products

 

 

DURATION

The duration of this individual contract will be of 11.5 months, from 15-Jun-2018 until May 30-2019 where the individual consultant will be contacted for the delivery of products on a need basis

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

Education:

  • Master-level university degree in Communications, nutrition, public policy,  Business Management or equivalent

  • A first level university degree in combination with four year experience may be accepted in lieu of the Master-level university degree.

Work Experience:

  • Experience writing formal communications documents on the impact of social development initiatives is required.
  • Previous research experience in one or more of the following fields:  Public Health and the food and beverage Industry, nutrition, youth, pledge fundraising.
  • A very good understanding and experience of the UN system, especially UNICEF  dynamics would be an asset
  • Significant experience in at least one of the following areas: Public Relations, Effective Communication, brokering partnerships between international organizations and private sector
  • Having an understanding of social development is an asset
  • Familiarity with Corporate fund-raising and/or Corporate Engagement would be an asset

 

Additional skills:

  • Full proficiency in English and Spanish, both written and spoken is required.
  • Demonstrated proposal and report writing skills, boosting in each one of the reports UNICEF credibility

  • Excellent inter-personal and networking skills (ability to build engagement and commitment)
  • Proven track record of working to deadlines

INDIVIDUAL CONTRACTOR’S WORKPLACE:

The individual contractor will work from his or her own premises.

Up to two periods of 4 days of travel to Panama RO could be foreseen within the contract duration, and will be covered in cost by UNICEF as per travel guidance

SUPERVISION

The contractor will work with guidance of the of the Chief Private Sector, and in close collaboration with the Children’s Rights and Business specialist, within the UNICEF PFP Unit of LAC Regional Office.
