Organizational Setting

 

The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) formulates and implements the IAEA's nuclear safety and security programme, which encompasses the IAEA's activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure, and responds to the needs of its Member States related to nuclear safety and nuclear security.


The Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety develops and maintains standards for radiation protection, radioactive waste safety, and safety in the transport of radioactive material that enable the beneficial uses of radiation to be exploited while ensuring appropriate protection of workers, the public, patients and the environment. It also assists Member States in the implementation of these standards and provides related services.

 

The Radiation Safety and Monitoring Section is responsible for the delineation of an international programme to protect workers, patients and the public from all types of exposure to natural or artificial radiation, in line with the most recent scientific knowledge and information. The Section is also responsible for the provision of radiation safety technical services to staff members and experts who may be exposed to ionizing radiation as a result of activities conducted by the IAEA.


 

Main Purpose

 

The Radiation Monitoring Technician reports to the Radiation Protection Specialist and is responsible for carrying out primarily routine radiation protection operations to fulfil the requirements of the Radiation Safety Regulations for the laboratories in Seibersdorf. Occasionally, he/she may be required to participate in field emergency response activities and special radiation protection operations.




Functions / Key Results Expected

 

  • Provide technical support services for workplace monitoring for the IAEA's own operations and for operations under its control or supervision to support the implementation of the Radiation Safety Regulations on IAEA premises, particularly at the IAEA Seibersdorf laboratories and the Nuclear Material Laboratory.
  • Control and perform specific analyses after incidents involving radioactive materials.
  • Lecture at training courses on radiation protection.
  • Carry out workplace monitoring for routine and non-routine events, including during the establishment and/or decommissioning of laboratory installations and equipment.
  • Provide field assistance for radiation protection support in missions and intervention work upon request.
  • Provide support for radiation protection related matters during testing of technical and fire alarm systems at the laboratories.
  • Handling of radioactive (nuclear, reference and waste) materials and sealed sources in laboratories.
  • Maintain and calibrate monitoring instruments.
  • Participate in on-call duties on operational radiation protection outside working hours.

The incumbent may perform his/her work in areas involving exposure to radioactive materials. Therefore, as an Occupationally Exposed Worker, he/she must be medically cleared by VIC Medical Service and is subject to an appropriate radiation and health monitoring programme, in accordance with the IAEA's Radiation Safety Regulations.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

  • Completed secondary education
  • Certification or diploma related to technical/laboratory environment an asset
  • Minimum of five years of experience in the field of radiation measurements and protection.
  • Solid knowledge of operational radiation protection and good experience in the provision of operational radiation protection in a laboratory environment.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
  • English language test (Level 1) and typing test (Level 2) to IAEA standard.


 

Remuneration

 

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at EUR 44684 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), 6 weeks' annual vacation, pension plan and health insurance

Appointment is subject to a satisfactory medical report. Recruitment will be on a LOCAL BASIS only. Outside applicants are required to supply to the IAEA or to authorize it to seek all information relevant to their suitability for employment by the IAEA. Testing may be part of the recruitment process.
