The UNICEF Europe and Central Asia Regional Office (ECARO) is seeking two qualified interns to contribute to the design, planning, budgeting and implementation of complex evaluations managed by the Regional Office.

Purpose of Assignment

Within the framework of the current UNICEF Europe and Central Asia Regional Office (ECARO) work plan, the overall purpose of the assignment is to assist the Regional Advisor, Monitoring and Evaluation in the preparation of planned Country Programme Evaluations for 2019.

General:

  • Contribute to the design, planning, budgeting and implementation of complex evaluations managed by the Regional Office.

Specific Tasks:

  • Provide support in researching, compiling, analysing and summarizing information on completed, on-going and up-coming regional evaluation related activities, including human rights, equity and gender aspects;
  • Conduct preparatory work and analysis for new evaluations.
  • Assist in the design and review of the evaluation frameworks and of evaluation tools.
  • Assist in the tendering and recruitment processes for RO managed evaluations.
  • Ensure UNICEF’s online database for evaluations is continuously updated for the regional evaluations in progress. Support the updating of the evaluation consultants roster.
  • Provide logistical and substantive support in evaluation exercises, ensuring regular communication with UNICEF country offices and evaluation teams.
  • Assist in design work of evaluation outputs, ensuring that they are attractive and user friendly. 
  • Participate in evaluation inception missions.
  • Perform other work related duties as assigned.

Supervision

The interns will work under the guidance and supervision of the Regional Advisor, Monitoring and Evaluation and in accordance with the evaluation standards, norms and procedures of UNICEF and the United Nations Evaluation Group.

Duration: 6 months(Flexible start date between October and December 2018)

Duty Station

UNICEF Europe and Central Asia Regional Office (ECARO), Geneva, Switzerland.             

Conditions of Service

The intern will full-time at the UNICEF ECARO office for 6 months. Applicants must state their availability (in terms of start date) in their application.

Internships will be remunerated with a stipend (1500 usd/month) to help cover the cost of accommodation and living expenses. However, interns should be ready to cover their own travel to the duty station as well as any additional costs above and beyond the stipend. UNICEF accepts no responsibility for the medical insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during the internship. Interns have to demonstrate a proof of medical insurance prior to the beginning of the internship.

UNICEF will support the intern in applying for a visa covering the entire period of their internship.

The purpose of the Internship Programme is to complement an intern's studies (in particular, the UNICEF supported EvalYouth/UNFPA evaluation training, Chisinau July 2018). There should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.

Eligibility

To be considered for an internship with UNICEF, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • be enrolled in a degree programme in an undergraduate[1] or graduate school, or be a recent graduate[2]
  • have formal training in the conduct of rigorous independent evaluations. Experience in the application of UN evaluation norms and standards is an asset.
  • be proficient in English (working language of the Regional Office);
  • have strong academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records or, if not available, a reference letter from an academic supervisor;
  • have no immediate relatives (e.g. father, mother, brother, sister) working in any UNICEF office; and
  • have no other relatives in the line of authority which the intern will report to[3]

Required Skills and Experience

  • be enrolled in or graduate from in economics, political science or other relevant social science, or a related field,
  • Strong interest in and knowledge of Human Rights, especially Child Rights,
  • Prior experience in the work environment of an international agency, NGOs, UN, or international institutions and knowledge of international development policies and programmes is desirable,
  • Excellent computer literacy (Microsoft Office products) and ability to manipulate and present data
  • Fluency in spoken and written English (knowledge of Russian is an asset).

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
