What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

The Project Unit or the Office of the President is seeking to expand its capacity to manage the budgetary and financial aspects of its operations, in particular regarding the activities of the Centre of Competence on Humanitarian Negotiation (CCHN - https://frontline-negotiations.org/), a strategic partnership with UNHCR, WFP, MSF and HD, under the management of the ICRC. The CCHN is conducting research and policy initiatives as well as offering between 20 and 30 workshops and seminars for humanitarian negotiators per year across the world. Its budget amounts to over CHF 2.5 million, funded by the ICRC, the strategic partners and governements donors.

Purpose

The Accountant (60%) is in charge of preparing, reconciling and analysing the accounting records and financial reports mainly of the CCHN.

The post-holder will be primary responsible for the budgetary planning, monitoring of expenses and preparation of the reporting to donors for the projects of the unit and particularly for the CCHN.

Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities

  • Prepares and revises operational budgets of the Unit and its projects;
  • Prepares and posts accounting entries in the accounting software on a regular basis;
  • Ensures accuracy and completeness of accounting transactions in accordance with ICRC's financial procedures;
  • Prepares the financial reporting required by donors;
  • Keeps files up-to-date and guarantees proper filing of relevant supporting documents for future reference, including audits;
  • Performs integrity checks of accounting entries made on a regular basis;
  • Knows, applies and complies with all administrative and financial procedures and deadlines linked to his/her work;
  • Identifies anomalies or other issues and reports them to his/her supervisor;
  • Prepares and maintains the reimbursement procedures of the CCHN Director.

Scope & Impact

  • Answers inquiries at the level of the Project Unit;
  • The accounting volume of the structure is under Sfr 200,000 a month.

Relationships

  • Internally, interacts with the Program Manager of the Projects Unit as well as the Finance and Administration Division fo the ICRC  at HQ and/or in the field. 
  • Externally, may interact with suppliers.

Certifications / Education required

  • Completed secondary schooling and vocational training.
  • Certificate in accounting.
  • Good level of English and French.
  • Computer proficiency.

Professional Experience required

  • 2 years´ work experience in a similar field.
  • ICRC Experience a strong asset.
  • Experience of international organizations an asset. 
  • Sound knowledge of accounting software
