  • Support the roll-out of the national Nursing and Midwifery Curriculum by coaching tutors in the implementation and advising on additional adolescent friendly service provision and early essential newborn care.
  • Strengthen the skills of nurse/midwife tutors in the delivery of, specifically, emergency obstetric and newborn education through on-the-job training.
  • Strengthen the clinical facilitation of student nurses and midwives in Matany Hospital, Moroto Regional Referral Hospital and during field attachments by accompanying students and coaching clinical facilitators.
  • Participate in the Preparation of the School of Nursing for the transition from offering only certificate level to also offering diploma level nursing and midwifery
  • Support health facility staff to increase their capacity to provide non-judgemental adolescent and youth services, both through skills strengthening and coaching.
  • Build the Capacity of students to be able to teach mothers on a one-to-one basis on maternal and newborn health care and services
  • Support health facility staff to increase their capacity to provide non-judgemental adolescent and youth services, both through skills strengthening and coaching.
  • Implement professional development strategies such as continuing medical education (CME),
  • Support tutors to develop training materials which can be used by tutors in the School of Nursing when teaching.
  • Coordinate with schools and support the roll-out of competency based training during clinical facilitation by implementing the use of Procedure Assessment Books and coaching clinical tutors to mentor student health workers
  • Implement the competency based model of clinical facilitation as recommended by teaching institutions.
  • Prepare and deliver lectures to student Health Workers (HWs)
  • Contribute to the development of IEC materials where needed.
  • Support the implementation of tutor programmes, providing mentorship training to tutors.
  • Compile and share activity and monthly reports with the supervisor (s)

Role overview

Build the capacity of health workers in the hospital to provide bed-side teaching and implement competency based learning. 
Support the roll-out of the national Nursing and Midwifery Curriculum by coaching tutors in the implementation and advising on additional adolescent friendly service provision and early essential newborn care.

Skills, qualifications and experience

The individual should be; Qualified Midwife with at least 5 years Tutor/mentor experience, Fully accredited by the relevant professional body.

 

This project is funded by Irish Aid’s Volunteering Initiative which aims to promote volunteering within Ireland and the Irish public. Only Irish citizens or people living in Ireland are invited to apply.


Allowance and accommodation
All volunteers have an allowance paid in local currency. The allowance meets reasonable living expenses in country, but will not be enough to send money home.

VSO works with some of the poorest communities in the world which means accommodation varies and will be basic.
