Job Description

The Roving Basic Literacy teachers will be working closely with the child protection officer to provide basic literacy classes in the homes of street and working children, through mobile activities or in the Safe Healing and Learning Space in the Child Protection Street and working children program in and around Tripoli. Street and working children often lack basic access to services and education. Working alongside the CP officer, the ‘roving’ basic literacy teacher will aim to provide basic literacy to street and working children on a daily basis inside their homes, through mobile activities or in the Safe Healing and Learning Space.

Teachers are expected to follow a curriculum provided. Sessions will be conducted in Arabic or English in various locations.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Provide effective teaching in basic literacy to street and working children in the homes, through mobile activities or in the Safe Healing and Learning Space accompanied by case workers of IRC and/or the child protection officer.For a maximum of 9 hours a week followingthe Lebanese MEHE approved curriculum and calendar;
  2. Implement child-centered teaching methods, and diverse teaching techniques to engage children from different ages and levels;
  3. Maintain a safe and effective teaching/learning environment during the sessions in the homes of the children, mobile activities and SHLS;
  4. Identify and refer cases to the child protection officer or case workers
  5. Prepare teaching hand outs and activity sheets prior to sessions where appropriate;
  6. Assess children’s learning progress using assessment tools, at the beginning of implementation  of the sessions,  and at the end of the month;

Qualifications

  • Education: University degree or teaching diploma in one of the subjects with in the Lebanese teaching curriculum
  • Work Experience: Minimum of 1 year of teaching experience at the elementary cycle level, or previous work in an NGO or with refugees
  • Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:
  • Ability to demonstrate patience and persistence in a challenging context;
  • Understanding of the challenges in working with street and working children and barriers to access education for street and working children;
  • Ability to remain calm and professional during challenging sessions with children;
  • Ability to work well in a team and under challenges circumstances;
  • Ability to understand and discuss with street educators and caregivers challenges in learning that children are facing as well as psychosocial/case management needs;
  • Strong ability to organize work  and adapt plans on a daily basis based on the ages and needs of the children;
  • Desire to receive and implement professional development/training opportunities. 

Language Skills: Arabic; some French or English Preferred

Certificates or Licenses: Teacher Certificate/Teaching Certification

Working Environment: Sessions will be held in closed spaces, in the homes of street and working children, through mobile activities or in the Safe Healing and Learning Space. Sessions will have a maximum of 10 children; ages of children and literacy levels of children may vary during sessions.
