Your team

We, the Safety team, are looking for students to join our dynamic, international team to support safety activities in EUROCONTROL’s Experimental Centre. As such, we offer valuable in-house training and excellent mentoring on a range of subjects to give our trainees the chance to maximise their learning experience and develop their potential.


We are a team of experts with varied backgrounds involved in a broad spectrum of safety activities, ranging from research on new concepts, safety tools and methods to support to deployment.

Your role

As a safety trainee, you will report to your mentor and apply your skills to work with your technical and operational team members in achieving the core objectives of your traineeship.


We have various projects to offer our safety trainees depending on their interest. With us, one of your roles could be to:


✈ Enrich existing safety risk models with operational data from incident reports;


✈ Participate in the assessment of how drones affect safety and develop new approaches to understand the impact and risks of their operation;


✈ Assist in developping tools and new approaches to support safety activities. This means that you will:



  • Support the management of safety requirements in safety assessments;

  • Participate in the definition of safety performance targets;

  • Analyse operational information such as radar and flight plan data;

  • Support the management of safety risk and ATM functional models development and versions.


✈ Analyse operational data applying Artificial Intelligence techniques to identify emerging safety risks and new safety indicators;


✈ Support Big Data studies and understand how digitalisation of the airspace will enhance data based approaches to safety measurement;


✈ Participate in research studies to better understand the human contribution to safety risk; or 


✈ Be involved in international projects supporting Air Traffic Service Providers to improve their safety risk management.

Your qualification


You are currently pursuing a Master’s degree or equivalent in a domain relevant and applicable to Air traffic management / Aviation domain, e.g. Computer Science, Mathematics, Data Analysis, Artificial Intelligence and Aeronautical Engineering, and you have an interest for safety-related issues.  


Your technical skills


As one of our safety trainees, Visual Basic, Java, C# and Python hold no secrets for you. Along the line, you have knowledge in computer science in general, applied mathematics or information science.


At EUROCONTROL, the working languages are English and French. As part of Performance and Methods unit, you are proficient in English (both verbal and written) and have a satisfactory working knowledge of French.

Only the candidates who will be invited for an interview/test will be informed of the outcome of the selection.


A flat-rate allowance of €900 (net) per month as a contribution towards living expenses will be granted.


Reimbursement of travel expenses to take up appointment and leave may be covered by means of a lump sum.
