1.     Organizational Context
  

a.    Organizational Setting

 

The post is located in the Office of the Director General (ODG). The ODG supports the Director General so as to enable him to fulfill his functions smoothly and effectively.

  

b.    Purpose Statement

 

The Special Representative of the Director General on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) supports the Director General by analyzing, assessing and providing expert advice and recommendations on the SDGs as they pertain to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and WIPO's work program as it implements the SDGs.

 

 

c.    Reporting Lines

 

The incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Director General.

 

 
2.     Duties and Responsibilities
 
The incumbent will perform the following principal duties\:
 
a.   Provide strategic analysis, assessments, advice and recommendations to the Director General concerning the impact of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in WIPO and concerning outreach and work streams in support of how WIPO implements the SDGs.  Closely follow the evolution of the SDGs and discussions and developments pertaining to them in both the UN in New York and more broadly.
 
b.   Facilitate the discussions on the SDGs as they relate to WIPO's mandate and work in the relevant Committees and other bodies in WIPO, particularly the WIPO Committee on Development and Intellectual Property (CDIP).
 
c.   Supervise and coordinate the preparation of various written reports, including reports to Member States, on the SDGs and related issues.  
 
d.   Represent the Director General as requested, including in high-level fora both within the United Nations System and more broadly, with respect to the SDGs.
 
e.   Liaise with high-level interlocutors, including Permanent Representatives, Ambassadors and senior level representatives of International Organizations and civil society as requested, with respect to the UN SDGs.
 
f.   Provide high-level analysis and assessments of the impact of the UN SDGs with respect to International Organizations and their mandates, business, civil society, and innovation ecosystems more broadly, while bearing in mind the mandate of WIPO.
 
g.   Liaise with and provide advice and guidance to colleagues in support of WIPO's work program as it implements the SDGs.  Monitor progress in this regard and report to the Director General, providing recommendations and action plans as required.
 
h.    Perform other related duties as required.
  
 
3.     Requirements
 
Education (Essential)
Advanced university degree in law, international relations, public administration or other relevant field.  A first-level university degree with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
 
Experience (Essential)
At least 15 years of relevant professional experience including in the areas of international diplomacy, policy formulation and administration at the national and international levels. 
 
Experience at a senior advisory level.
 
Experience (Desirable)
Experience working with an International Organization and/or in an Executive Office.
 
Language (Essential)
Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.
 
Language (Desirable)
Knowledge of French or other official UN languages.

5.       Information
 
Mobility\:  WIPO staff members are international civil servants subject to the authority of the Director General and may be assigned to any activities, office or duty station of the Organization.  Accordingly, the selected candidate may be required to move from time to time to new functions and/or to another duty station.
 
Annual salary\:
Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment.  The post adjustment (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change without notice in accordance with the rates as set within the UN Common System for salaries and allowances.  The figures quoted below are based on the April 2019 rate of 67.0%

Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations.

Additional Information
 
Initial period of two years, renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.  No fixed-term appointment or any extension hereof shall carry with it any expectancy of, nor imply any right to, (further) extensions or conversion to a permanent appointment.
