The digital age has changed the communications landscape radically in the past decade altering the way we communicate.  In line with its Global Communications Strategy, UNHCR requires the services of highly skilled visual thinkers who are capable to use of technologies to develop creative solutions to the organization communications challenges, a to video producers capable of identifying, shooting, scripting, editing, and packaging videos for publication on its core websites and social media channels and for distribution to media partners. This body of work may include producing news and feature packages, pieces to camera, social media edits, single- or multiple-camera interviews, livestreamed or recorded events Instagram stories, serialized stories and short documentaries. It involve filming in the field as well as, on some occasions, in office or studio contexts. The overarching aim is to produce timely, accurate and compelling videos that help us lead the narrative on forced displacement, generate empathy and mobilize action.

To do their jobs well, UNHCR¿s video producers need to cultivate a keen understanding of our target audiences ¿ including the substantive themes and video formats that resonate deeply, convey messages effectively and spark quality engagement. They must be vigilant about editorial and journalistic standards, attentive to protection concerns and political sensitivities, and focused on communicating successfully with key demographics. It is imperative that they are aware of the technical requirements and restrictions of different platforms and devices, including social media and smartphones, and that they document their work with accurate shot lists, dope sheets and other metadata.

The video producers¿ functions, working relationships and skills specializations vary depending on language, location, grade, and whether they sit within a country operation, a regional bureau or the Global Communications Service. For example, some will mainly produce original content, teaming up with a dedicated camera/editor; some will produce, shoot and edit on their own; and some will primarily adapt videos produced in other languages, adjusting tone of voice to suit audiences and platforms.

The Associate Video Production Officer reports to the Regional Communications Hub Manager in Mexico City, working closely with the Head of the Video Unit in Geneva, and liaising closely with colleagues handling media relations, text, photos, social media and electronic publishing. Focusing on displacement issues across Latin America, the incumbent is expected to identify, report, shoot, script, edit and package video content in English and Spanish for publication on UNHCR¿s global web and social media channels and distribution to media companies.


All UNHCR staff members are accountable to perform their duties as reflected in their job description. Duties

- Conceive, strategize and develop creative audio-visual content to support regional communications priorities, key messages and UNHCR work positioning.   
- Write, film, edit and package audio-visual content in English and Spanish for different audiences (general public, donors, policy makers) and different outlets( UNHCR¿s global web,  social media channels, news media)Adapt videos originally produced in English for Spanish-speaking audiences, adjusting tone of voice to suit audiences and platforms.
- Ensure that videos are aligned with UNHCR¿s communications priorities and key messages and are closely coordinated with briefing notes, web stories, photos, campaigns and social media output.
- Ensure adherence to journalistic and editorial standards, including accuracy and consistency.
- Liaise with relevant colleagues in country operations, bureaux and divisions to clarify factual questions, address protection concerns, weigh political sensitivities and optimize messaging.
- Ensure that video footage is properly logged and transcoded, with accurate shot lists, dope sheets and metadata.
- Ensure that edited videos (and raw footage or clips, when requested) are sent to the Video Unit in Geneva and/or uploaded to Refugees Media in accordance with standard protocol.
- Communicate clearly the vision for projects through presentations, concept notes or scripts.
- Work with social media, PSP and field communications colleagues to optimize and promote video content, with an eye to maximizing engagement among target audiences.
- Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Years of Experience / Degree Level
or P2/NOB - 3 years relevant experience with Undergraduate degree; or 2 years relevant experience with Graduate degree; or 1 year relevant experience with Doctorate degree

Relevant Job Experience
Essential:
Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in video production, ideally producing, shooting, scripting and editing news and feature packages for a media company and/or a human rights or humanitarian organization.
Desirable:
Experience editing videos with a nonlinear video editing system, preferably Adobe Premiere Pro, and motion graphics software, preferably Adobe After Effects. Experience working with a digital asset management system. Experience working in a developing country or field location. Good knowledge of the UN, UNHCR, refugees, human rights and humanitarian issues.

During the Webinars, latest updates on security and well-being will be provided, and FSS and SWS will address questions raised by participants. Applicants are highly encouraged to benefit, when applicable, from all measures as they provide most up-to-date security and well-being information helpful to assess staff’s readiness to serve in a High Risk Duty Station. A Staff Welfare Officer will also be available, if and when required, to discuss with interested applicants the results of the psychological preparedness tool as well as readiness for assignment in High Risk Duty Stations.
