The Associate Director (Child Protection), Programme Division (PD) will provide professional leadership in UNICEF in the area of Child Protection by serving as the Organization's key position for knowledge exchange and programming on this subject, developing and maintaining advocacy links with governments and all major development agencies, academic institutions, NGOs and private sector entities active in this field. The Associate Director is also responsible for providing strategic leadership in advancing the equity focus through Child Protection and related programming strategies as well as a human rights-based approach to programming, and for providing management oversight for implementation of context-relevant strategies through interaction with regional and country offices. UNICEF considers this position to be among the top positions on which the achievement of the long-term results of the organization in the area of Child Protection depends. Specifically, this position will focus on the results in Goal Area 3 of the 2018-2021 Strategic Plan and provide programmatic guidance on UNICEF’s positioning on child protection issues in the context of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, Agenda 2030 and beyond.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have...

  • An Advanced University Degree from an accredited institution in social sciences, sociology, human rights or a technically relevant area is required.
  • A minimum of thirteen (13) years of proven, successful work experience in policy development, analysis, implementation, programme development and implementation.
  • Excellent command of written and oral English is required. A good working knowledge of Spanish or French is highly desirable.  Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.

Person Profile

  • Programmatic leadership across Child Protection issue areas, including Child Protection in Emergencies, Harmful Practices and Child Protection System and Justice for Children, Violence Against Children
  • Familiarity with cross-cutting issues such as Gender mainstreaming, Social Norms and Research and Programme Monitoring
  • Experience in global networking.
  • Highly regarded by the Child Protection community.
  • Experience in responding to emergencies and bridging the development and humanitarian is desirable.
  • Successful record in engaging the donor community and effective fundraising.
