Job Description

The Urban Savings and Loans Volunteer is responsible working closely with Communities /Community Leaders and the urban program team in mobilizing, formation and training ofUrban savings and loans Associations (USLAs) commonly known as VSLAs

Key Responsibilities.

The Key tasks of the Community worker include but are not limited to:

  • Mobilizing Potential VSLA members and facilitating formation of VSLAs
  • Training USLA members on VSLA methodology
  • Monitoring USLAs and mentoring the officials on record keeping
  • Collecting accurate and consistent USLA data and submit to Business training and Apprenticeship officers
  • Facilitating EA$E discussion series to USLA members and their spouses/Partners
  • Support to organize and facilitate Business and life skills training to USLA members
  • Support the group members to develop a business plan
  • Monitor groups/ individual businesses and guide the group members on business management
  • With support from other project staff members, register the clients through CommCare application
  • With guidance of ERD Manager and the USLA supervisor, develop weekly action plans that directly reflect overall work plan activities
  • Participant in staff training and capacity building
  • Develop relationships with Community leaders to ensure the smooth implementation of project
  • Liaise with the ERD manager and the USLA supervisor to link the mature USLAs to banks and other financial institutions for further services
  • Assess groups and recommend for seed fund grant.
  • Undertake any other duties as directed by the supervisor.

Monitoring and Reporting

  • Attend the USLA meetings regularly to ensure that the USLAs remain functional
  • Prepare and submit reports as required and incorporate client’s feedback in a timely manner, including information related to services received.
  • Work hand in hand with other project staff especially the Business Enterprise officers and case workers to ensure that the group businesses are well supported and become sustainable
  • Work with data officer in updating the database in the CommCare on clients registered and accessing services.

Key Result Areas

  • Ensure timely client needs assessment and services are provided as per the project requirements.
  • Facilitate timely linkage/referrals to protection services as needed.
  • Offer Business counseling services
  • Train all groups on VSLA methodology
  • Recommend USLAs for seed fund based on assessment and business plan.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Certificate in Social Work/Social Sciences/Counseling/psychology/ community Development or other related field preferred. Degree in similar fields would be an added advantage.
  • Experience working with reputable organization or local organizations/groups, in provision of Livelihoods/ economic and social empowerment support to clients both urban Refugees and Vulnerable Kenyan Youth.
  • 1-2 years’ experience in formation, training and monitoring of Village savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs)
  • Excellent listening and observation skills, including ability to create trust, support, respect and interact with clients of all background and diversity.
  • 1-2 years’ experience working with communities in direct service provision to vulnerable groups, including Youth and women with protection issues.
  • Good facilitation skills
  • Good working knowledge in computer skills.
  • Knowledge of open source tools such as ODK collect, KoBo Toolbox or CommCare platforms. Use of Kobo/ CommCare data entry will be an added advantage.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and respect for clients at all times is essential.
  • Ability to lead, train, supervises, and motivates other BILLY staff and local partners in their respective tasks in a professional, respectful and supportive manner.
  • Positive and professional attitude, able to organize, maintain composure and prioritize work under pressure, work for longer hours when necessary and be able to coordinate multiple tasks with adherence to detail.

  • Fluent in English and Swahili
