UNICEF works in some of the world's toughest places, to reach the world's most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential. Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone. And we never give up.

For every child, resilience

The humanitarian situation in DPRK is characterized by chronic food insecurity and limited access to quality health and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services. This situation is further aggravated by deep-rooted high level of chronic and acute undernutrition, with more than 10 million people estimated to be undernourished. Undernutrition among young children in DPRK remains prevalent and widespread across the country.

Key findings from the 2017 Multi Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) indicate one out of five children under 5 are stunted and face an impaired physical and cognitive growth. Three per cent of under-five children are affected by wasting and face an increased risk of death.

UNICEF supports efforts of the MOPH and other government counterparts to foster quality and optimal maternal and child nutrition services through the health system as well as through multi-sectoral forums. UNICEF’s immediate focus remains to strengthen performance of the integrated services of preventative and curative nutrition programmes for women and children of DPR Korea such as the infant and young child feeding, micronutrient supplementation and malnutrition treatment.
