The mission of the Green Climate Fund is to assist developing countries to respond to climate change while bringing prosperity to their peoples.

Established in 2010, the GCF invests in transformational climate projects in the developing world. The Fund makes an ambitious contribution to global climate action and channels significant financial resources into developing countries to help build low-emission and climate-resilient societies.  It is country-driven and undertakes actions which reflect the circumstances of each country concerned and its national aspirations. The GCF is a key enabler of the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

Since its establishment, the GCF has approved 102 projects and has committed USD 5.0 billion in climate finance. In addition, it has built up an extensive program to support developing countries to identify their needs, in particular, those who are most vulnerable to climate change impacts.

Position description

The Operations Coordinator will work as part of the integrated Office of the Executive Director (OED) unit, reporting to the Deputy Executive Director. As part of this highly collaborative team, the Operations Coordinator will support the OED of the GCF with the coordination and management of their tasks, with a particular focus on operations functions relating to the project cycle, readiness and Fund administration. The role will include working with members of the senior management team to assist cross-Secretariat coordination, relationship management with internal and supporting KM team in promotion of knowledge sharing and collaboration across the organization.

Duties and responsibilities

Under the guidance and supervision of the Deputy Executive Director, s/he will be responsible for:

  • Supporting the Executive Director and Deputy Executive Director in coordinating and monitoring the implementation of management decisions and strategy relating to Fund operations, to allow them to focus on their essential responsibilities;
  • Supporting the effective and efficient operations of the Fund, particularly on matters relating to project approval and implementation, readiness and Fund administration, by proactively helping to identify and resolve risks, challenges, and opportunities requiring management attention;
  • Fostering coordination and knowledge sharing on operation matters across the senior team and divisions of the Secretariat, in collaboration with KM;
  • Preparing briefs, documents, reports, and dashboards regarding GCF’s strategy and operations, and providing recommendations on issues and priorities;

  • Relationship management with internal and external stakeholders;

  • If required, accompanying the Executive Director or Deputy Executive Director on missions; and

  • Assistance with other tasks as required by the Deputy Executive Director.

Required experience and qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in economics, finance, international relations, international development, law or related subjects;
  • Minimum 9 years of relevant work experience, including progressive experience in a professional capacity/ies relevant to the post, with substantial knowledge of processes relating to the preparation, financing, approval, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of climate change or development projects;
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, strategic thinking, and problem-solving ability;
  • Familiarity with organizational management in a complex international organization, including familiarity with procurement, IT and other administrative systems, risk and results in management frameworks, and knowledge management practices;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, and experience preparing high quality written briefings, dashboard reports, and other documents; knowledge of another UN language is an advantage;
  • Organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to multi-task and deliver quality work on time under pressure;
  • Tact, diplomacy and reliable with confidential information and materials;
  • Highly collaborative, team player and experienced working in multi-cultural organizations;
  • Willing to travel as required;
