UNICEF, the world’s leading organization working for the rights of children, seeks a Child Rights and Business Specialist: (tools and guidance), to be based in Geneva, Switzerland.

UNICEF's Strategic Plan identifies engaging business and governments on the impact of business policies and practices on children as a core organizational strategy for achieving results.

UNICEF's Child Rights and Business (CRB) team in Geneva translates the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights through the lens of children's rights and, working with business, trade associations, governments and other partners, is developing innovative approaches to addressing business impact on children. Known as Better Business for Children, the approach mobilizes UNICEF's unique position as a UN organization with a child rights mission and mandate and a field presence in over 190 countries, integrating child rights-based engagement with the business sector into programming. As such, child rights and business is an integral part of a current drive within UNICEF to expand partnership and engagement with business across the organization.

The role of the CRB team is to support UNICEF to develop robust theories of change and programme strategies that integrate the business sector addressing its adverse impact on children's rights to achieve results. This requires building the capacity of UNICEF offices to identify the issues and to engage the business sector on them, as well as supporting technical guidance on how to do this. The team provides leadership on the implications for children and UNICEF of thematic areas of business activity, such as supply chains, marketing or regulation. It contributes thought leadership, evidence and research, written up in case studies, guidance and tools, embedding the impact of business into UNICEF's regulatory and planning systems. It supports the assessment of the potential CRB strategic relevance of major global business partners and industrial sectors. It is responsible for developing the UNICEF results story involving business contributing to programme results through becoming "better businesses for children".

The team works with governments, business platforms, businesses and UNICEF sectoral specialists to develop tools, guidance documents and case studies supporting the integration of children's rights into business policies and practices.

For every child, Hope

To proactively coordinate, develop, write, collate, manage and disseminate tools, guidance, knowledge products and results supporting UNICEF engagement with business to address adverse impact on children. This is particularly timely in the context of the roll out of the wider Business for Results initiative.  Specifically, the TA will work across National Committees and UNICEF to coordinate and collate guidance and good practice emerging from around the organization and will accelerate: a) writing and developing materials and guidance, including case studies, to equip UNICEF staff to integrate engaging with business on adverse impact on children into programmatic activity; and b) collating and telling the global results story.

How can you make a difference?

Main Tasks

  • Support the development and use of tools and guidance on CRB for UNICEF staff, including ensuring that this is integrated with broader UNICEF Knowledge Management and related initiatives. This includes collating, capturing, adapting, packaging and disseminating guidance, tools and proven or promising practices on CRB activities from around UNICEF.
  • Develop information and knowledge products, including briefing notes, articles, case studies, video clips, etc. to raise knowledge and awareness among UNICEF staff and corporate partners.
  • Develop and implement content for CRB sub-sites of the PFP Intranet and other channels as needed. Participate in the activities of the PFP Intranet Editorial Board.
  • Ensure proactive management of the CRB page on the website and upload relevant CRB content.
  • Create networks and communities to allow two-way sharing of information and knowledge on CRB around UNICEF, and to support story telling internally and externally.
  • Write and/or coordinate company and results-specific CRB content as requested
  • Assist the team in drafting, preparing and formatting other knowledge products such as PPPx pages, presentations, briefs, summaries, guidelines, etc. as required.
  • Lead the preparation, facilitation and documentation of brainstorming sessions and consultation processes to capture evidence and how to information on good and/or promising practice and lessons learned on priority CRB areas and initiatives.
  • Coordinating and advancing National Commitee results reporting, CO annual reporting and RO convening and reporting, identifying effective and efficient mechanisms for results reporting.
  • Support Key Perforamce Indicator development that captures the contribution to UNICEF results of business addressing adverse impact on children. Contribution made to 2019 annual report.


  • Tools, guidance, information and knowledge products related to CRB developed, regularly updated and properly disseminated to relevant stakeholders through the channels accessible to Country Offices and Regioanl Offices, as well as the PFP Intranet. This includes through the PPPx and programme guidance notes and other information products developed by other divisions.
  • Children's rights and business sub-sites and pages in the PFP Intranet and the UNICEF website are accessible, user-friendly, regularly maintained and updated with relevant content.
  • Yammer groups/Communities of Practice/team sites set up and facilitated/supported, as required.
  • Analytical case studies drafted, packaged and disseminated, focused on lessons learned/good or promising practices on CRB topics. These are to be accessible to programme staff, and so will be uploaded on relevant platforms.
  • Fact sheets, presentations and other knowledge products created as required.
  • Workshops, training sessions and online training packages supported.
  • Global KPI development for CRB contribution to programme results coordinated with all regions.
  • Results regularly collated and reported, including through compelling narratives.
  • A comprehensive CRB annual report published no later than end February 2020.

To qualify as a champion for every child you will have...


  • An advanced university degree in one of the following fields is required: law, social sciences, development, business or another relevant technical field. (A first level university degree in a relevant field combined with 7 years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.)


  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible professional work experience in corporate social responsibility or sustainability, or child rights, or international development, or monitoring and evaluation, or knowledge management, some at the international level.
  • A technical background in child rights or child protection, rights-based programme approaches and at least 2 years of field experience with a focus on child rights or associated programming, including designing, monitoring and impact assessment of projects and programmes is highly desirable.
  • Experience and demonstrable skills in producing, editing and uploading online content
  • Experience with technical knowledge sharing tools (Office 365)
  • Experience in facilitating online communities of practice and discussion groups.
  • Ability to work independently and to meet tight deadlines
  • Experience of working within UNICEF, exposure to CSR/corporate sustainability work, and of working with industry platforms, investment institutions, and with governments, the UN, and NGOs or within the corporate sector would be additional assets.

Language Requirements:

  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English, fluency in other UN languages (Arab, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is an asset.
