  -part-time (80%)-

 

The Berghof Foundation is an independent, non-profit organisation working to prevent political and social violence and to achieve sustainable peace around the world. We have over 45 years of experience in peace support, conflict transformation research and peace education. Headquartered in Berlin, the NGO is run by a diverse team and works with local partners around the world.

 

As a Researcher, you will be part of our Conflict Transformation Research team at the Berghof Foundation in Berlin and work closely with and report to our Head of Department. Your main responsibility will be to manage the Berghof component of a joint, collaborative project within a consortium of seven German research institutions that aims to monitor and analyse (Islamic) radicalization in Germany and to transfer knowledge into policy and practice.

 

The position will be based in Berlin for a period of up to 5 years, depending on project approval.

 

 

 

The main tasks of the position include:

  • *        Develop and accompany national, regional and local networks of radicalisation experts from (repressive and preventive) institutional and civil society backgrounds in Germany.
  • *        Plan and conduct expert surveys and focus group discussions with a broad, inclusive group of experts to monitor and analyze radicalisation processes in Germany.
  • *        Document project outcomes and develop regular publications for the dissemination of project findings within a consortium of seven German research institutions and at national and international conferences. Support knowledge transfer into practice.
  • *        Coordinate research activities with the consortium through regular exchange and reporting and for the purpose of data and method triangulation.
  • *        In addition, further tasks will be assigned to support consortium-wide research activities and knowledge transfer. 

 

 

Qualifications:

  • *       PhD in a relevant field, such as security studies, peace and conflict studies, international relations, political science or sociology is a strong asset 
  • *       Proven advanced track record in research and publications relating to radicalization, violent extremism or terrorism (preferably in the field of Islamic radicalization in Germany) 
  • *       Experience in qualitative data collection, in particular conducting expert interviews and facilitating focus group discussions 
  • *       Knowledge of German institutional and civil society actors in the field of PVE and CVE. 
  • *        Fluency in German and English are essential.

 

Additional skills:

  • *       Strong empathetic skills to work with broad variety of actors 
  • *       Ability to work independently and with limited direct supervision.
  • *       Regular travels within Germany will be required (approx. once per month)
  • *       Curiosity, passion, flexibility and perseverance
