Legal Advisor (f/m)

Location: Vienna or Innsbruck/Austria

SOS Children’s Villages International is the umbrella organisation for the global federation of SOS Children’s Villages. As a non-governmental social development organisation we help children without parental care and families in difficult living conditions through services in care, education, health and emergency relief, and we advocate for children’s rights. We work in 136 countries and territories, reaching over one million children, young people, families and caregivers each year.

Mission

The Integrity, Compliance & Legal (ICL) unit acts as the advocate within the Federation in actively promoting integrity and corruption prevention and provides advice and guidance on legal matters. In particular, we play a key role in helping to ensure that SOS Children`s Villages International (SOS CVI) and member associations carry out their work in accordance with the SOS CVI legal framework, national/international laws, regulations, industry standards, internal policies and SOS’ CVI key values.

Tasks and Responsibilities

Data protection

  • Implement and provide legal advice on Austrian and European data protection laws to co-workers at all (managerial) levels
  • Act as focal point for all data protection matters within the organisation, including for data security breaches
  • Organise and provide mandatory trainings on data protection to co-workers within the organisation
  • Support in drafting a data protection policy for the Federation
  • Support in drafting, negotiating and concluding relevant data protection clauses and agreements with external partners
  • Keep up to date with legislative, political and academic developments in the field of data protection at national and international level

Contracts and agreements

  • Implement and provide legal advice on the new procurement regulation for the organisation to co-workers at all (managerial) levels
  • Act as procurement committee member on behalf of the ICL unit
  • Draft or review, or amend or interpret existing, contracts and agreements with institutional or other external partners
  • Negotiate contracts and agreements with the relevant external partners

Sanctions compliance

  • Become familiar and keep up to date with the organisation’s responsibilities and liability in the area of sanctions compliance
  • Act as backup to the Sanctions Compliance/Legal Advisor in her absence and as required

Other responsibilities

  • Support the other ICL team members, in particular the Senior Legal Advisor, upon their request, in preparing legal advice in the areas of commercial law  and other areas of civil law
  • Be instrumental in strengthening the co-workers’ awareness and their compliance with the organisation’s policies, regulations, standards and procedures in the areas of data protection and procurement
Requirements
  • Advanced degree in law, ideally an Austrian law degree with a European legal specialization
  • Minimum of 7 years proven work experience in the legal profession in one or more of the following areas: data protection, procurement/commercial/contract law (Austrian or other)
  • Sound knowledge and experience in data protection matters, in procurements and in setting up contracts and agreements
  • Extensive experience in drafting and presenting in the English language memoranda on legal advice, contracts/agreements
  • Strong communication skills with service-oriented mind-set
  • Fluent English language skills, German, Spanish and/or French would be an advantage
  • A valid Austrian working permit or eligibility to work within the EU
