Internal Research Fellow (PostDoc) for Earth Surface and Interior Future Mission Science

You will report to the Head of the Earth Surface & Interior Section, Earth & Mission Science Division, Science, Applications & Climate Department, Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes. You will work in close cooperation with other Division and Directorate staff.
The Division is a dynamic team leading R&D activities, in partnership with European and international industry and academia, aiming at advancing science, developing future space missions, novel applications, supporting industry growth and contributing to maximise the science impact of existing and future missions.
Our main activities are related to missions focussing on processes at, near or beneath Earth’s surface:
• studying the feasibility of science and applications of new space-based mission concepts in the Earth system science domains of oceanography, solid Earth, cryosphere, geodesy and land surface;
• studying the aspects related to simulating and generating products for new concepts;
• analysing existing ESA mission data and campaigns, possibly together with data from other missions with a view to future ideas;
• carrying out mission science for Earth Explorer research missions GOCE, SMOS, CryoSat, Swarm, Biomass, FLEX, Harmony (formerly STEREOID) and Hydroterra (formerly G-CLASS), for Copernicus missions Sentinel-3 and Sentinel-6, and for High-Priority Candidate Missions CRISTAL and CIMR;
• studying other future concepts such as Next-Generation Gravity Mission.

You will contribute to Division activities related to the abovementioned missions or to new concepts for the future, and to topics related to processes at, near or below Earth’s surface.
You will have the opportunity to work with the relevant scientific experts in the Division.
Applicants should have recently completed, or be close to completion of a PhD in a related technical or scientific discipline. Preference will be given to applications submitted by candidates within five years of receiving their PhD.
You should have broad knowledge of Earth surface and/or interior research. You should have good analytical and communication skills and be able to work in a multicultural environment fairly autonomously.
The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
