1.    Organizational Context

 

  1. Organizational Setting

     

    The post is located in the WIPO Judicial Institute, Office of the Legal Counsel.  The WIPO Judicial Institute aims to support the efficient and effective judicial administration of intellectual property, aligned with the national legal traditions, and economic and social circumstances, of Member States.

     

  2. Purpose Statement

     

    The incumbent assists the Director in conceptualizing and implementing the work program of the WIPO Judicial Institute.

     

  3. Reporting Lines

     

    The incumbent works under the supervision of the Director, WIPO Judicial Institute. 

     

2.     Duties and Responsibilities

 

The incumbent will perform the following principal duties\:

 

a.  In preparation of WIPO meetings for judiciaries organized by the WIPO Judicial Institute, including the annual forum for intellectual property judges and the master class on intellectual property adjudication, draft initial memos, develop programs and supporting documents, and coordinate speaker participation and presentations;

 

b.  Support the establishment of strategic partnerships with Member State judiciaries and judicial academies, developing and maintaining contacts with courts and judicial institutes, as well as other relevant organizations;

 

c.  In support of the WIPO Judicial Institute’s continuing judicial education programs and other judicial capacity building activities, prepare draft programs and information papers, facilitate experts’ participation, conduct capacity building sessions and deliver presentations;

 

d.  Organize the collection, analysis and online publication of information on judicial systems, jurisprudence and empirical data on judicial activities;

 

e.  Undertake legal research related to judicial administration of intellectual property and coordinate the preparation of draft resource tools and publications for judges, in particular addressing areas that raise novel intellectual property adjudication issues;

 

f.   Liaise and help ensure the coordination with relevant WIPO Divisions providing judicial capacity building, with a view to strengthening complementarity, building synergies and achieving a coherent, systematic, Organization-wide approach to judicial capacity building;

 

g.  Perform other related duties as required.

 

 

3.     Requirements

 

Education

Essential

University degree in law or otherwise eligibility to practice as an attorney, preferably with a specialization in intellectual property law.

 

Experience

Essential

At least six years of relevant professional work experience in the area of law, preferably through court experience and in intellectual property law.  An advanced university degree may be accepted in lieu of two years of experience.

 

Desirable

 

Experience in the organization of judicial education programs.

 

Language

Essential

Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English, including the ability to draft legal texts.

 

Desirable

Knowledge of other UN languages.

Good knowledge of the legal issues of intellectual property law, in particular in relation to judicial systems and jurisprudence.

 

Excellent analytical and legal drafting skills.

5.      Information

 

Mobility\:  WIPO staff members are international civil servants subject to the authority of the Director General and may be assigned to any activities, office or duty station of the Organization.  Accordingly, the selected candidate may be required to move from time to time to new functions and/or to another duty station.

 

Annual salary\:

Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment.  Please note that this estimate is for information only.  The post adjustment multiplier (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change (increase or decrease) without notice.  The figures quoted below are based on the November 2019 rate of 76.7%

Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations.

Additional Information

 

Initial period of two years, renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.  No fixed-term appointment or any extension hereof shall carry with it any expectancy of, nor imply any right to, (further) extensions or conversion to a permanent appointment.
