Description of taskWithin the delegated authority and under the supervision of or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer will undertake the following duties:
- Compile daily situation reports and other regular reports as required;
- Follow up with political affairs officers in the field on reporting and analysis issues:
- Gather, select and analyse information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press;
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues in general and in particular as they affect the operational area;
- Keep abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of assignment and a provide inputs to reports;
- Provide technical and substantive back-up in the implementation of mandates of the Analysis and Reporting Section;
- Maintain contacts with other sectors of the Mission, UN international partners and government authorities on coordination and policy matters;
- Keep abreast of actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organizations, government and non-governmental organizations within assigned area of responsibility;
- Maintain database information relating to potential disputes and conflicts in the mission area;
- Identify and monitor indicative districts in regard to popular attitudes towards peace, security, subnational-governance and economic conditions, compiling periodic updates for senior management.
- Support Information management tasks to consolidate and maintain updated records
- Take notes during meetings; prepare notes on meetings; briefing notes; talking points and documents as requested;
- Support and backstop section colleagues as needed;
- When working with (including supervising) national staff or (non-)governmental counterparts, including contractors/vendors/suppliers, the incumbent is strongly encouraged to set aside dedicated time for capacity development through coaching, mentoring and formal and on-the-job training;
- Perform other related duties as may be required.
- Political Science, Political Economy, International Relations, Law, Public Administration or related fields.
- Advanced higher degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a Political Science, Political Economy, International Relations, Law, Public Administration or related area.
- A first-level university degree or equivalent in combination with relevant training and/or professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree;
- Other desired/mandatory required technical knowledge
- Excellent oral and written skills ( drafting, formulation, reporting skills) in English is required.
- Languages spoken in Afghanistan or the region is an advantage;
- At least 3 years of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in political science or international relations or related area. Experience working in the UN or other international development organization is an advantage.
- Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing is required.
- Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
- Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
- Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
- Sound security awareness;
- Have affinity with or interest in UNAMA’s area of work, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.
