IDLO IN MYANMAR

IDLO has been working in Myanmar since 2013, to support the country’s government justice institutions, lawyers, civil society representatives and communities to strengthen rule of law and access to justice, enhance gender equality and promote peace and development in line with Sustainable Development Goal 16, as part of the ongoing democratic transition in the country.  IDLO is currently implementing 2 projects in Myanmar: the Rule of Law Centres (ROLCs) Project, located in Mandalay (Mandalay Region), Yangon (Yangon Region), Myitkyina (Kachin State), and Taunggyi (Shan State) and the Strengthening accountability for SGBV in Kachin and Shan State Project. Through these projects, IDLO is promoting increased public legal awareness in Myanmar by providing training on a range of rule of law, human rights and access to justice topics. IDLO is contributing to facilitating dialogue between communities and justice service institutions about local justice issues, rights and responsibilities to civil society organizations, lawyers and communities.

THE POSITION

Reporting to the Field Program Manager, the interpreter will perform the following duties:

  • Undertake a range of translation and interpretation assignments in the target language ensuring that the meaning of the source text is retained. Translation involves a full range of legal documents, reports, formal text, manuscripts, official correspondence, publications and other materials. Accurate and complete versions in the target language using the most appropriate range of vocabulary and the commonly accepted or established equivalents of professional, scientific or technical concepts and terms is required;
  • Translate according to established rules pertaining to factors, such as word meanings, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and mechanics;
  • Edit texts in the target language to ensure a style of presentation in conformity with IDLO standards;
  • Undertake research related to the texts and/or subject matter at and contribute to the development and preparation of multilingual glossaries used by translators and/or interpreters;
  • Proofread, edit and provide final translated versions with a grammatical accuracy, well-expressed version of the translated text, as a word-processed document;
  • Assist international employees with consecutive or simultaneous interpretation and translations as required;
  • Provide simultaneous interpretation into the target language in a variety of settings, e.g., IDLO classes, external meetings, and/or roundtables normally dealing with a particular substantive topic;
  • Carry out administrative tasks in connection with all translation/interpretation assignments;
  • Provide dubbing services for video, audio or other multi-media transmissions and promotional tools as needed; and
  • Any other relevant duties that may be assigned by the supervisor.

IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE 

Education and Work experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • At least 2 years of significant relevant professional experience in verbal interpretation and written translation is required; 
  • Familiarity with working with legal issues and legal texts.

Languages 

  • Strong command and full proficiency in Myanmar and English is required. 

Specific technical skills, competencies and knowledge

  • Proven competence to ensure content accuracy, impeccable ability to maintain the contents and style of the original text.
  • Ability to perform the quality check: proofread each and every item and submit it clean and without any typographical errors
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work constructively with both national and international staff;  
  • Patience, perseverance, and the ability to effectively support capacity development of other staff; 
  • Proven ability to see tasks through and deliver results;  
  • Must be able to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner; 
  • Must be able to gather and analyze information skillfully; 
  • The ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines, flexibility and an entrepreneurial spirit;  
  • Keen sense of ethics, integrity and commitment to IDLO’s mandate; and 
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. 

TERMS AND CONDITIONS  

The interpreter will be based in Yangon, but may be required to work from other locations as determined by the Supervisor. The duration of the position will be until 30 June 2021, with the possibility of extension, subject to performance and availability of funding.
