1.Background

The Danish Refugee Council initiated its activities in the island of Lesvos in November 2015 due to the unprecedented influx of asylum seekers. Following new political developments and displacement dynamics in early 2016, DRC expanded its activities to the mainland to support the people living in several sites across the country. With offices in Athens, Larissa and Thessaloniki, it currently implements a wide range of activities, including Site Management Support, legal assistance, identification of individual needs and protection of highly vulnerable persons, access to services within and outside the hosting sites through cultural mediation, and non-formal education. DRC works closely with the refugee communities, the Greek authorities and other humanitarian actors to ensure a protective environment for refugees and asylum seekers in Greece.  

2.Purpose

DRC Greece is looking to recruit a qualified, flexible and enthusiastic professional to work as an English Language Teacher. Under the overall supervision of the Education Team Leader, in close cooperation with the Education Officer and with the technical guidance from Education Coordinator, the teacher will be responsible for the implementation of the Education programme for migrant and refugee children, youth and adults accommodated in emergency reception site(s) of Northern Greece. Furthermore, the teacher will ensure that all education activities are of high quality, age appropriate and in line with children, youth and adults’ needs.

3.Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include, but not necessarily be limited, to the following: 

• Implementation of non-formal education activities (English language, numeracy and public schools’ homework support) for school age children (6 to 15), youth (16-17) and adults.
• Planning and realization of educational content and activities based on age, education background and individual needs of children, youth and adults.
• Ensuring that relevant project data (attendance lists, lesson plans) is accurately collected and updated on a weekly and monthly basis, including breakdown of age and gender.
• Planning and coordinating distribution of teaching and learning material, including stationery and school kits.
• Provision of information and advice to beneficiaries on existing education programs.
• Contributing to the reinforcement of existing communication with persons of concern throughout DRC units and promoting the right to education for all children.
• Collaboration with DRC cultural mediators and other staff members, in order to design and implement relevant education activities as well as life skills projects.
• Other tasks as required by the Education Team Leader and/or Education officer to support implementation of DRC’s education program.

 4.Required Qualifications

• At least three years of experience in education and teaching (English). Prior teaching experience with non-Greek speaking children and adolescents is an asset.
• University degree in education or related filed required.
• Experience in teaching Greek or STEM will be considered an asset.
• Excellent verbal and written English and Greek skills are required.
• Effective  classroom management skills.
• Previous working experience with local or international NGOs will be considered as a strong advantage.
• High professional ethics.
• Computer skills.

6.Terms and Conditions

• The contract will be under the Greek Labor Law, and all allowances will be   provided to the employees (Christmas, Easter, Vacation bonus).

• The position will be based in the broader area of Northern Greece and national terms and conditions apply.
