SOS Children’s Villages International is the umbrella organisation for the global federation of SOS Children’s Villages. As a non-governmental social development organisation we help children without parental care and families in difficult living conditions through services in care, education, health and emergency relief, and we advocate for children’s rights. Our work is guided by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the UN Guidelines for the Alternative Care of Children. We work in 136 countries and territories, reaching over one million children, young people, families and caregivers each year. To support us with this important responsibility we are now looking for a:

Chief Executive Officer (f/m)

Mission

As a member and leader of the Management Team (MT: Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chief Operating Officer (COO), Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the CEO is accountable for the overall performance of the General Secretariat (GSC) and drives the strategic goals of the SOS Children’s Villages federation, which closely align with several of the internationally recognized sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Together with the MT, the CEO represents the organisational executive arm to internal key stakeholders within the Federation Governance structure.
S/he provides strategic and operational leadership to develop organisational strategic plans in alignment with organisational needs, based on the Strategy 2030 and looks for opportunities and threats to strategize and strengthen the organisation by advising right steps.
S/he monitors GSC budgets, ensures internal controls and standards are in place as well as sustains the SOS Children’s Villages programmes and ensures consistent improvement.

Tasks and Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership support to the federation, convert organisational strategy into operational midterm and annual plans
  • Sustain the SOS Children’s Villages programmes, align it with the mission, vision and the 4 values of the organisation and overcome the challenging areas by identifying the future opportunities and threats
  • Collaborate with other INGOs, explore new opportunities of cooperation

Entrepreneurial Leadership

  • Keep focused on key objectives and core principals of the organisation ensuring that effective implementation strategies are in place based on organisational and regional needs
  • Drive the global performance of the General Secretariat based on an effective financial management
  • Manage the matrix structure and with participation of all stakeholders ensure the delivery of project objectives to the highest quality standards
  • Create an atmosphere of mutual trust; ensure leadership capacity building and sustainability
  • Address and respond to all significant stakeholders related to the performance of the organization
Requirements
  • University degree in International Development, International Humanitarian Affairs, Political Science or Social Science or with substantial comparable experience
  • Professional experience in a leadership role with relevant international know how in a development and/or humanitarian context preferably with a child focused or social organisation, combined with a good understanding of political and operational priorities
  • Strong relationship builder and communicator with experience in leading diverse and cross-cultural teams with the ability to develop and implement an organisation-wide strategy for programme excellence
  • Excellent leadership and people management skills to create an atmosphere of mutual trust and to inspire and motivate managers
  • Leads by example by setting high ethical standards in line with our SOS Children’s Villages values: commitment, courage, trust and accountability
  • Excellent analytical skills to identify key points, develop and generate strategic goals and translate them into practical proposals for action; drive and encourage innovation
  • Proven multi-cultural awareness with strong communication skills
  • Excellent written and oral English language skills; knowledge of additional languages (German, Spanish or French) would be an asset
  • More than 10 years of experience in managing a P&L of equivalent size would be an added advantage
