Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization.

Job Description

You will be part of the team responsible for the data processing software and computing infrastructure of the CMS experiment. In particular, you will belong to the experts that monitor the health of the distributed computing infrastructure and central services of CMS.

  • You will operate, maintain, and enhance the testing infrastructure that assesses the readiness of computing sites in a quantitative way. Communication via ticketing systems and email is of high importance as CMS sites are in various time zones.
  • You will provide coverage during the European time zone and work with admins from the data centers around the world to help optimize resource usage, and debug site issues.
  • You will be trained in all aspects of the distributed computing infrastructure of CMS and the technical details of Grid computing.
  • You will operate time critical tasks and services and take over mission critical monitoring responsibilities. The monitoring infrastructure provided by CERN is based on HDFS, ElasticSearch, InfluxDB, Kibana, and Grafana. CMS is in the process of migrating all monitoring to this ecosystem.
  • You will migrate legacy visualization of service and site readiness to the new setup and enhance them in the process.
