UNOPS is undertaking a project that aims to protect and promote the Iraqi cultural heritage, through the renovation of the Sumerian Gallery of the Iraq museum in Baghdad.

The project will support Iraq in its efforts towards the realization of Agenda 2030 and more specifically contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 11 “Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”, by strengthening efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural heritage.

UNOPS will be responsible for undertaking the following, but not limited to:

  • Interventions on the air conditioning systems of the hall, to make it suitable for the new layout;

  • Upgrading of the electrical system and the monitoring system TVCC (closed-circuit cameras);

  • Design and preparation of the space for the exhibition, including gypsum boards and metal skeletons for the internal partition of the hall and the creation of the didactical/ exhibition path;

  • Procurement and installation of show cabinets, security system and burglar- resistant doors, and illumination system; 

  • General painting and preparation of the floor.

Functional Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance of the Head of Programme and the direct supervision of the Project Manager, the Engineer is required to perform the following specific duties and responsibilities ensuring their effectiveness, transparency and integrity:

Coordination, Delivery, and Performance:

  • Timely review and follow up on project designs and documentation in compliance with all relevant design codes and standards;

  • Support and oversee all aspects of design and renovation activities;

  • Review technical specifications, Bills of Quantities and instructions accompanied by “issued for renovation” drawings;

  • In addition to preliminary conceptual plans, review of  designs, floor plans, elevations, dimensions, sections and all installations, including heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, plumbing lay out and electrical wiring, all consistent with UNOPS design requirements and expectations;

  • Assist in providing Post Design Advice (PDA) in response to queries or issues arising during the renovation phase;

  • Respond to the queries raised by UNOPS Design Review Team during final review of completed design package;

  • Ensure Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSE) measures are implemented throughout the project implementation, as per the country PSEA action plan, as well as embed sustainability dimensions including social and gender inclusion, as well as Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental (HSSE) aspects into the project during the design and renovation phases.

Governance, Monitoring and Reporting: 

  • Undertake site visits/assessments of the project’s elements, recommended by UNOPS for design and renovation works;

  • Monitor the quantities during renovation works and prepare variation orders as applicable;

  • Review of baselines and reports for work schedules and programmes, as requested by the Project Manager;

  • Undertake field visits as required to ensure satisfactory resolution of problems/ issues on site;

  • Implement the requirements of UNOPS Quality Assurance plan and ensure all architectural designs are thoroughly documented and filed for future reference;

  • Assist the Project Manager and project team in the preparation of regular design progress reports, budgeting and forecasting as required;

Administrative Tasks: 

  • Maintain records, compile periodic reports and any specific reports required by UNOPS standard procedures;

  • Maintain records of engineering architecture documents including end-to-end design scenarios;

  • Check, verify and approve the interim payments submitted by the contractor/s and submit detailed reports to the Project Manager.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education
  • A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University is required in Architecture or Civil Engineering.
  • A Master’s degree from a recognized university is desired.
Experience
  • At least 2 years of experience in architectural and/ or civil works design and consultancy services of buildings renovation/ rehabilitation projects in Iraq and/or the Middle East region is required.

  • Comprehensive knowledge in computer software, particularly “AutoCAD” (latest Versions – 2009 and higher) is required.

  • Work Experience with an international Organization and/or UN Agencies is an asset.

  • High proficiency with computers, and other software/ platforms related to the positions field of expertise. Good experience in working with the G-Suite platform including, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Gmail, Google Sheets, Docs, and Slides. 

Certification
  • Membership of the Iraqi Engineers Association is required.
  • Prince2, PMP  or similar project management certification is an asset. 
Language
  • Fluency in English and Arabic.
